I'll be a week post op tomorrow and I am SO HUNGRY!!! My stomach growls until it hurts. It wakes me up out of my sleep. I don't know what to do. I thought the sleeve was supposed to reduce my hunger. Instead, I feel hungrier than ever! What can I do?

There are two major situations that will create hunger pains. 1. Acid Reflux (which does not feel like hearburn, by the way) and 2. Dehydration due to liquid intake shortages. It is hard to get more than 64 ounces at first. Did you Dr put you on a acid blocker such as Prilosec? You might want to ake him/her about that. This too shall pass! Take care!

I was really hungry the first couple of weeks post surgery while on liquids. Not sure of your plan but it helped me to not be so hungry to have creamy Soups, thinned yogurt and keeping up on my Protein shakes. I've moved up to purees now and that helps even more. Make sure you're getting in all you're supposed to. You will make it through.

Have some more Protein shake. My NUT said I could have as much as I could tolerate in a day. If you are allowed broth or cream Soups, have some of that. I was also allowed Greek yogurt when I was on "liquids" and that helped too.

I'm on prilosec. I'm having 2 shakes (60 grams of protein) per day and tons of broth/stock/cream Soup. I have always been a meat eater, so I'm hoping that when I move on to pureed foods, some tuna will get me through

Hunger occurs right behind your ribs where your stomach is. If it's pain near your belly button it is intestines moving around. Many many many times the two are confused. Just a thought to throw out there.

If it is hunger you may try increasing Water and setting an alarm to eat throughout the day. Also, solid Proteins will last longer in your stomach and keep you full linger than liquid Protein. You may try string cheese, tuna, canned/moist chicken, etc and see if that helps

Good luck!

I felt the same way post-op. It even woke me up during the night, but after about 10 days or so it just stopped. I don't even wake in the morning hungry any more. Before surgery I was starving the minute my eyes opened.

It's been 2 and 1/2 years since my surgery and I'm STILL hungry all the time. I eat about every hour and a half to two hours. When I listened to other people tell me not to eat more than 3 times a day, I didn't lose weight very fast at all but as soon as I started listening to my body and eating when I was hungry, the weight started to melt off. I lost almost 200 lbs and most of that was gone within the first 9 months. To this day, the more frequently I eat, the healthier and thin I stay.

That's really awesome! I am not far out but I certainly understand the concept. Before surgery I could loose weight only by eating more often.

Eating 3 meals a day with 4 Oz pouch cannot allow to get enough Protein. Just isn't possible. I definitely feel better when I eat small every 1-3 hours.

Im 4days out and thought I was starving at first too. But I noticed when I took my pain med, the hunger pangs went away too. I think mine where more gas pains since i never got dizzy or lightheadedness... which I do if im really hungry. Now that the gas is out my body most of that grumbling has stopped and the "hunger pangs" are gone too.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
