Curious pre op girl needs to know !

Hey everyone, ????

my surgery is this Tuesday the 30th & I NEED to know... How bad is the pain on day one after surgery ? Is it a couple hours and then morphine does its job or ? I know I shouldn't focus on the pain but it's the only thing I'm truly worried about.

For me it wasn't bad. Just make sure you're asking for pain meds before the pain gets out of control. Fortunately the anesthesia pretty much keeps you in a blur that first day.

I am 3 weeks out today. I already lost 20 lbs! The pain was not that bad. I was on a morphine pump and I had a revision from a lap band to gastric bypass. My awesome surgeon Dr. Chang said he did a lot of cutting! I went home on Wed. You will do great! The surgery and days after are just a blur to me now and well worth It!!!! Good luck!

It really depends on your body! My pain was bad but manageable with medications. I had gas and incision pain! It got better, I would do it again! Pain management is more important for some than others! Work with your team!

The most pain I had was right when I woke up. My chest hurt right in the middle which is actually where your stomach is. They quickly got my pain under control (within 15 minutes). The biggest pain is actually from the gas in your belly, the best way to control that is by walking, gas x strips and heat packs which they will give you in the hospital.

Stay on top of the pain meds and ask them for heat packs. That first night is a little rough but only because of the gas in your belly.

I was literally up and walking within the first 30 minutes of getting to my room. I had no catheter so I had to get up to go. As soon as I did I realized it felt better both standing and sitting up.

The second day when I wasn't walking I was sitting in the chair in my room with hot packs on my belly.

I had surgery on Monday, went home on Wednesday and took my last pain pill on Thursday. Really it was not bad once that gas left my body and you have to work to get rid of it.

Good luck with your syrgery and don't be scared. Your fear is probably much worse than reality.

Wow jerrimac ,Congrats !

Thanks for the responses everyone, I'm pretty sure it's all in my head and it won't be as bad I'm making it to be. Funny thing is I've had 3 surgeries before but you never quite get used to it.

Good luck on your journeys !

In my case, it wasn't pain -- as much as it was discomfort. I was asking for the pain medication in the hospital only to make myself more comfortable so I could sleep. They sent me home with hydrocodone, but never needed it at home.

I was uncomfortable but no real pain. I was on my little morphing pump, but pushed it like twice mostly so I could sleep. I lost that the 2nd day and then was put on Tylenol 3. I was sent home with some but didn't use it.

Im one week and one day from surgery. Although i had the revision surgery from band to bypass so mine was more than urs will be. Honestly on a scale of 1 to 10 the worst it got was 4. I was really surprised actually. The most pain i had was when i acidentally caught my drain tubing and it came out a little. Thank God it is gone today. 22 pounds down so far :)

My surgery was on Tuesday June 30.

I had the morphine pump and did use it when I thought of it. The pain was never an issue. I was expecting horrible pain every time I changed position or got up or down but it never happened.

There is some discomfort. Gas I'm guessing and I'm very tired. Napping feels so good. Walking is comfortable and I'm getting Water down. My Protein Shake is slowly going down. Not as much as they told me to but I'm honestly trying.

Yup. Other than finding my Honey and hanging on to him, this is the best thing I've ever done.

It really does depend on your body and your threshold for pain. I had my sleeve done on 6/24/15 the anesthesia kept me asleep most of the day after surgery. I had minor pains the day after in the morning but morphine took care of it. I was discharged on 6/25/15. The weekend went over smoothly snd had some mild discomfort which Tylenol took care of.

I was back to work on Monday 6/29/15.

Since then no pain or discomfort, thank God :-)

Good luck :-)))

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
