Should I expect to gain weight?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on 6/22, so it's been 7 days of only Clear Liquids. I feel good and I'm surprised how little I am craving food. My question is, once Protein Shakes (possibly Tuesday) are started, is it typical to gain a bit of weight, since the calories are increasing so dramatically? I'd like to be prepared so I don't get discouraged. Thanks!!

I didn't weigh myself for the first week or 10 days or so after surgery, just because I was pumped full of IV fluids in the hospital. I didn't lose as much as I thought when I did finally weigh myself just because of that. Once I got through that first week or so though, now 22 months post op I can tell you that i've never really "gained". I mean, I may fluctuate a pound or 2 during that time of the month, but I definitely would not expect to gain at any point really if you are sticking to the plan as far as the right amounts of Protein, carbs, Water, not loading up on sodium, etc. The first 8 months or so you will see the weight fly off if you stick to the new way of eating. You may stall here or there, but I don't see any reason that you would gain. That's been my experience anyway.....

I also agree that if you stick to the plan you won't gain. If exercising and adding muscle you may not lose weight but you will lose inches for sure. I would suggest taking measurements so you can compare when the scale isn't moving. Good luck!

The only gain I've had was when I got really dehydrated because I was sick, and then I "gained" back the Water weight that I falsely lost. I was heartbroken to see the scale go back up, but my surgeon said it wasn't a real gain and not to let it get me down.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
