Pre op diet concern for post op patients

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Has anyone else had the pre-op Protein Shakes and then tummy issues? I am two days pre-op and my tummy is just not getting used to the shakes. My stomach doesn't hurt at all but I hear constant grumbling (not hunger) like bubbles in my upper tummy underneath my left rib. I am not having any problem having a bowel movement but very soft. Sorry, TMI. Lol. Any help is appreciated!!!

There are so many factors, what shake are you using, what are you mixing it with? Preop was hard and it changed the sounds my stomach made. I burped a lot. Not sure why. I'm was worth it though.

You might try an almond or soy milk? Sometimes that helps. Otherwise, yea, your stomach does gurgle a lot. Just wait until after surgery! ;) Totally worth it though! I drank a lot of broth - especially Swanson's Tortilla Soup broth. It was WONDERFUL but a little spicy and I had to back off of it after drinking so much of it for 4 or 5 days. sugar free Popsicles help too. Hang in there! You can do this!

Thank you so much! It doesn't bother me too much. I just don't want dr to say something is wrong and my surgery is put off !

@@kell778 - If your dr gave you a choice to use other Protein drinks, you might check out the Premier Protein ready made shakes. They taste pretty good - both chocolate and vanilla. It's about 11 ounces and 30 g of Protein. I have powders and like them as well but find myself going back to the Premier quite often (drinking one now in fact :D). helps in getting your protein post-surgery too AND I have been adding Salted Caramel sugar free Syrup made by Torani into the vanilla shake and yummy!!

I used Lactaid milk. I didn't have any issues with gas, diarrhea or anything Pre-op. I had to use 2% milk, because I needed the extra fatty acids. I was told. I am still supposed to use 2% milk if I do Protein shakes now. I had issues with regular milk pre-op, but not other dairy products. Remains the same after surgery.

I used unsweetened almond milk as well. If you have the option, definitely try premiere shakes. They are really good. I love the strawberry crime one personally. I was on Bariatric Advantage preop. They are so great and boy did I struggle. Once you get through the surgery you realize and appreciate the challenge!! Good luck!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
