Just had Gastric Sleeve, looking for a buddy/mentor

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I'm 29, from Dallas. No kids, and I just had the Gastric Sleeve done in Frisco, TX. I'm freaking out a little, I've never had any type or surgery before, so the whole recovery thing is quite new to me.

I'm also scared of everything, like my left arm hurts (im assuming from the IV) and the outside of my left thigh is numb!

Actually I'm freaking out a lot. If I could get some advice or some words of comfort that'd be great.

Thank you all!

There is always pain with any type of surgery. You will heal with time. Since this is your first experience I understand the freak out. If you have questions ask your Dr. I hope this will put your mind at ease.

The pain is temporary your results will be amazing.

Watch the numbness in your thigh. Are you on blood thinner shots? If it is still numb Monday, call your doctors office and let them know.

Thanks for your responses everyone.

Today I'm feeling a little better. I slept a lot. Today is my last day before I can have Protein shakes. So just Popsicles, chicken broth, and Water.

I'm not going to lie though, i do feel hungry!

I called my doctor about the numbness on the outer side of my right leg- he said it's fine. Something about nerves getting pinched during surgery. He said it should go away in a few weeks :/

Today's highlight is trying to take a shower and wash my hair. Wish me luck!

Just thought I would follow up on the numb left leg question. I was sleeved on May 18 and had the exact same thing with my left leg. I too was worried that they had done real damage while they were in there taking my stomach out.

It is just a pinched nerve probably from the swelling. Good news is mine got better over a couple of weeks. I would estimate I was five weeks out before I quit noticing it. I did figure out that sleeping on my back made it worse. By the way, I'm from North Dallas as well. Feel free to keep in touch as we both go on this journey. ☺️

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
