juno5 30 Posted June 27, 2015 Sometimes I get so mad when people can sit there telling me that the way to lose weight is to exercise and eat healthy. Do they not think I've done that?! Have they ever been in my shoes?? Just another reason why I don't want to tell people at work I am having surgery...
sleevenv 483 Posted June 27, 2015 You are (or are going to be) eating healthy and exercising in order to lose the weight! The surgery is a tool to increase the likelihood you will do both successfully.
ShrinkingPeach 1,291 Posted June 27, 2015 Agreed with @sleevenv. The plan is to eat healthy and exercise so in a way you will be doing the things they say but with an added tool of the surgery. If you don't wish to tell them then don't. You should only share with those that will support you not tear you down. When they ask what you are doing then you can say that you are eating healthier and exercising. It is none of their business unless you want it to be. Good luck!! Have they ever been in my shoes?? Just another reason why I don't want to tell people at work I am having surgery... Aren't those people the ones who have never struggled with their weight? LOL They don't get it that it's not simply calories in and calories out, we are not a piece of machinery but are a complex system effected by DNA, emotions, health, environment, hormones, etc., etc.. What the "easy way out" people don't really understand is that the equation remains the same after surgery, but we're still going to have to do the hard work to lose excess weight. The easiest way out is to do nothing. I too didn't say anything to most of my co-workers, but you're not going to hide the visible changes, however, although people notice I've found most don't say anything and those that do, I just tell them I'm getting my weight under control. Good luck!
Babbs 14,681 Posted June 27, 2015 And that's exactly what you're going to be doing. With the added benefit of of a little tummy
IcanMakeit 1,318 Posted June 27, 2015 I find myself having to control my eyes from rolling when I hear thin people make such pronouncements. Do they think all obese people are stupid and without willpower? Most of them wouldn't last a day on the diets we've been (temporarily) successful on before resorting to WLS. They really don't get it.
BizzyB 119 Posted June 27, 2015 I find that people who are super judgmental of it truly have no idea what the process entails. I am thankful that I work with nurses and they totally understand the challenges we face and what we have to overcome to be successful with the surgery! What matters most is that you are making a decision that will greatly improve and impact your health - their opinions are moot.
juno5 30 Posted June 27, 2015 The worse part of this is that I am a RN and these were other RNs saying this about it all. Secondly. How am I suppose to keep it to myself when the hospital I work at is the hospital I'm getting my surgery at? I know we have hippa laws..but I still worry about being talked about behind my back. This sounds so juvenile when I I read it ..but it is how I feel.
Debbie Jean 406 Posted June 27, 2015 (edited) Don't you just want to look at them and say, "Oh, my God! I had nooooo idea! Thank you so much! It's so simple an idiot could figure it out. And to think I never thought of that. Boy, I should have just talked to you rather than an actual doctor. You really are an f*ing genius!" Voice needs to be dripping with sarcasm while rolling eyes ???? Edited June 27, 2015 by Debbie Jean

And to think I never thought of that. Boy, I should have just talked to you rather than an actual doctor. You really are an f*ing genius!" Voice needs to be dripping with sarcasm while rolling eyes ???? This is the response I want to give to Doctors who throughout the years treat everything with: you need to lose weight. The absolute worst was when I twisted my knee in aerobics class and the very young, very thin, did I mention very young, doctor said she couldn't do anything for me but that I needed to lose weight. "Gee, I wish I would have thought of that." Why in the world did she think I was injured in the first place. Normal weight people get sports injuries all the time. Somehow, they manage to get treated.
quiltermom65 38 Posted June 28, 2015 I used to be one of those that said I would never resort to WLS and it was the "easy way out". Well, I'm here on this forum eating crow. I'm wanting WLS myself and learning all about it. Within the past 2 weeks that I've been doing research I've learned that it's not the easy way out, that there is still a lot of work to it. I'm glad that it's a tool that will help jump start the weight loss so that seeing some loss will bring on more motivation to exercise and eat right.
Pillar2butterfly 391 Posted June 29, 2015 I know what you are saying. I am the type of person that normally doesn't care what others think of me...or my opinions and choices. But I hear it about others and it ticks me off...like we don't have enough concerns! Since I've chosen to tell basically no one, I don't hear it about myself. There is my husband, my daughter, one sister, and my best friend that know, all of which support me. I've told my boss that I need surgery, but did not say for what. Everyone thinks they are an expert. I can guaranty what I will say if this happens to me, "Good thing I don't care what you think about it. I suggest you do that for yourself and let me to my own choices."
nilamji 22 Posted June 30, 2015 Trust me, I know! What makes it worse is I got that attitude from my own sister! Everyone else has been super supportive.
