Lactose Intolerance and Protein Shakes

Recommended Posts

My aunt needs to get in more Protein and she has a lot of food restrictions. She cannot have sugar and is lactose intolerant. I figured WLS shakes won't have sugar and I know there are people on the board who are lactose intolerant. So what Protein Shakes do you drink that taste decent?

For those of you that are really sensitive to lactose is the whey protein based shakes an issue or do you need to drink something else?

My aunt is working with a NUT. Aunt is looking into Ensure but I think she is overwhelmed so I figured I would ask here. Due to a storm that rolled through our area she is without power. Having some protein shakes on hand would have been nice for her as what she normally eats needs to be microwaved to thaw and then cooked. With the power outage it was hard.

So any thoughts on good tasting protein shakes for lactose intolerant people?

Look for shakes that are 100% whey isolate, not whey concentrate. The whey isolate shakes will not have lactose. Brands that I like are Syntrax Nectar (comes in lots of flavors), Jay Robb (several flavors), and Unjury -- comes in a variety of flavors, the one I liked was chocolate Splendor.

You can buy samples sizes of all of these brands, just Google [name of brand] + sample.

Almond milk, cashew milk, and soy milk are good alternatives to dairy for blending Protein Drinks. Or, if your aunt can handle lactose-free dairy milk, that's an option too.

Thanks for letting me know the differences on the whey isolate versus concentrate. I use Matrix myself and have tried some of the Nectars. I like the Syntrax brand.

Thank you for posting this. I too am lactose intolerant and have been looking around for suggestions on post-surgery diet.

I'm a bad lactose intolerant as I still love cheese and ice cream, but I probably wont be able to handle much after the surgery.

There are also a lot of non-dairy based Protein powders out there.... Hemp, soy, pea, sprouted seeds, egg, rice, etc. just google them. brands I've tried include Garden of Life, Spirutein, Vega and Plant fusion. I'm no longer lactose intolerant, but I still like to "mix things up."
