5 weeks out and feeling depressed

Recommended Posts

Surgery May 20th...5 weeks post op today... the last few days I've felt really down and just hating life, crying for no real reason! I know there will be ups and downs but figured I would of been feeling down right after surgery... is this normal or is it something to get used to for a while??!!!??

You just had a major surgery, and if you've had an decent amount of weight loss, your hormones are going to be haywire for quite some time to come. Totally normal to have wild mood swings and crying jags.

May not happen for everyone, but definitely to a large percentage. Knowing it is biological makes it a bit easier to deal with, but it still sucks.

Fat carries estrogen. As you loose it, the estrogen is released into your body. That can really mess with mood.

Also, the above post is right. Major surgery plays a huge part. Plys, if you were an emotional eater, you don't have that crutch anymore.

It will take time for your body to get used to the changes and hormones and new diet, etc.

Please!... reach out to those who support you and to your Dr and let them know. There are options to help . Don't suffer in silence. You made a great choice for your health by having surgery. It will get better!

Thank you! I've gotten over that first hurdle with some help from friends and family... it all makes complete sense and now I feel more prepared for the rollercoaster ride to wellness!!!

Awesome! I'm like a Rollercoaster with emotions these past few weeks. I just hold firm that it will balance out and get better. I reach out to 2 really close friends that I know won't judge and keep on the boards to get help or give where I can. That seems to be working so far :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
