I am so please that at 5 weeks post surgery I've lost 39 lbs (since I've started this journey). I feel so much better, it's amazing! However not one person outside of my family has noticed that I've lost weight. I realize that I'm 5'11" and proportionally that's not as much than if I was 5'2", but still I'm disappointed. I know, I know that I didn't do this for the reaction I'd get, but it still bugs me. I have to laugh though because I really didn't want to share with others that I've had the surgery -- I got my wish didn't I? :)

Don't feel bad, it's nice when people notice and compliment us! I have always found when losing weight in the past that no one noticed until I lost about 20% of my starting weight.

Also, if you are still wearing your same clothes, they are going to start to get baggy on you -- wearing clothes that fit really well helps people notice, at least in my experience.

No one complimented my weight loss at all, but I attributed that to the fact that I have lost and regained weight so many times over the years, that people are hesitant to say anything anymore.

Soon you will get the look of shock on peoples face and the complements. It really is nice when it all settles down and they except that this is you.

Hey, a little vanity on this journey is okay – it helps keep us motivated. As is a little selfishness. We need to keep our program a priority in our lives and not let anyone derail our progress. Eventually people will probably start to notice and comment on your weight loss. Accept the compliments graciously. I started out saying things like, "Thanks, but I still have such a long way to go." And gradually, I learned that the best answer is, "Thanks for noticing. I've been working hard at it and I feel great!" Try to enjoy the ride!

Like Jamie, people have seen me so many times in various stages of weight loss, I rarely got comments. Until recently. It seems the 70lb number for me was the magic number, because finally people who haven't seen me for a while now act blown away instead of thinking somehow I look different, but can't put their finger on it, lol. Plus I haven't been this size for about 10 years, so that helps :)

I did share with some people and now after I get the compliment (which is awesome) they want to know how many pounds :(

I get the "oh, well just keep working at it and I am sure you will lose more...." response.

I haven't lost as fast as others and I feel like I am considered a failure to not have lost 60lbs by now. At one time I hit 282 (HW), I managed to lose some before I got weighed in again and started in the upper 260s/lower 270s. I feel a lot better and I am pretty much losing 1-2 a week...and at 52, it is probably best.

You don't have to tell them how many pounds lost if you don't want. I got those comments, too. I think another reason people didn't notice is because I was on the slow side too. I had lost like 50 some at 6 months, so that was a little on the slower side. You just gotta keep at it. Patience, persistence, resilience!

I decided after my first follow-up doctors appointment that I wasn't going to tell anyone how many pounds I lost as I went along. I told my mom the number after that first visit because she was there, but I told her and my sisters, etc. that I was not going to announce a number.

I see my mom every day, one sister every few weeks, one sister a few times a year, and my brother a couple of times a year so it will be interesting to compare reactions when the are all here for July 4th.

I am particularly interested to see if the nieces and nephews even notice at all.

Wait. You had surgery 7 weeks ago and you feel like a failure to not have lost 60 pounds already!?!?! I'm almost 10 months post op and have lost 62 pounds.... Am I missing something?

as long as you feel better then forget what other people see, sometimes people dont notice because they never honestly noticed that i was that overweight, even though i was at my biggest..and as far as "how many pounds have you lost?" tell them just enough to feel sassy and walk away with a grin...keep them guessing...

i dont weigh myself except for once every couple weeks at the gym, my husband allows no weighing!

and my clothes are def falling off..but can go from big to sloppy quick in my job, so going for new pants soon..

congrats on the loss, i am 5 weeks out as well....

all that matters is that YOU FEEL GREAT and you did something that for me was the hardest thing since losing my Dad to do....

be proud!

So it sounds like it may be time to wear more fitted clothing, if you want to show your new "slimness" - is that a word?! You deserve compliments, and here's mine: Yay! You look AWESOME!!! Well done! Go buy yourself an awesome outfit, that shows all you want to show...and strut your stuff!!! Have fun with it!

They may have noticed, just don't know how to compliment you :)

It took about 50 lbs. lost before people said anything. They may have noticed 'something' but didn't realize it was weight loss. Also..yes..better fitting clothes make the weight loss more noticible. I'll tell you though...after a while, you get tired of the attention. What I get now, and like, is 'you look nice today' or 'that dress is pretty'. People are getting used to seeing me this size and the compliments are more generalized rather than size-centric.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
