Surgeon Recommendations for NY/NJ area

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I live in Rockland on the boarder of North Jersey and New York. Looking for recommendations on surgeons to perform the gastric sleeve. Is there anything I should specifically be looking for? any insight would be great.

Thank you

Yes you should look for a few things for example, Is your surgeon affiliated with a bariatric center of excellence (http://www.obesityaction.org/educational-resources/resource-articles-2/weight-loss-surgery/bariatric-surgery-centers-of-excellence-why-they-are-important-when-selecting-your-surgeon-and-hospital) Does the surgeon you choose accept your health insurance if you have any. I personally used NYU Langone medical center in Manhattan they fit my criteria and also were recommended by my Primary care Dr. They also have offices in various parts of NY including one office upstate I believe. My surgeon was Dr. Christine Wren Fielding she is in my opinion excellent. Good luck to you on your journey!

I just got mines done with Dr. George Fielding at NYU. they were amazing. The are really well staffed with nurses who are very professional, patient and attentive. Loved my experience. I'm only one week out of surgery and feel great.

Oh downside is you need to pay $250 out of pocket for the nutrionist but it's for unlimited visits for that one time payment. Another $250 for the psychological evaluation. They accept most private insurance as well as medicaid.

I am using Dr. Strain at Englewood Hospital in Englewood, NJ. He is at a Bariatric Center of Excellence. He works with two other surgeons, Dr. Ibrahim and Dr. Morales. Dr. Morales just took out my Lap Band yesterday. She was great and Dr. Strain will be doing my Revision in September, he is great too. They also have a nutritionist right in the office (which is located on Engle St.) Their website is www.bergenlap.com

Hello fellow Rocklander,

I'm using Dr Cerabona at westchester medical. I choose him because two of my specialist recommended him. I would recommend where ever you go make sure it's a center of excellence. I'm not far into the process. I met him last week. I liked him a lot. Just saw the nutritionist and getting all my medical visits and tests done. Good luck to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
