Feeling miserable

Recommended Posts

I'm one month post op. I'm mad most of the time, feeling angry at everyone and everything... I do hope these mood swings stop someday. I'm also having trouble keeping my diet ???????? that's my worst problem.

I can relate. I went through major mood swings the first month after surgery. I can tell you it gets better. I'm six weeks out now and feeling 100% better.

That is helpful to hear, I never once imagined the emotions I would be faced with .All I could picture was nothing but happiness but I'm hoping things get better.

I had read that a lot of people went through mixed emotions after surgery but I never dreamed they would have been so drastic. I had days at the beginning when my family would be pigging out on dinner and I was just sitting there with my Protein Shake and I literally wanted to scream at the top of my lungs how mad I was! other times I had no energy and felt like I could just lay in bed and sleep for like 24 hours straight. now that I'm dropping the weight and feeling better I know it was all worth it! I think that first month it's just such a shock to your body and everything is trying to readjust hence the mood swings. I think in a couple more weeks you'll feel much better. Good luck!

I felt the same way. I spent years numbing my emotions with food and when you take the food away it can be quite an adjustment. Find new ways (healthy ways) to sooth yourself when you are stressed and angry. If you can learn these new skills now you will have a much better chance and making a permanent change to your health/weight.

Hi - I haven't had any mood swings yet, (though I did get a little snappy at people when I ate a teeny bite of something I shouldn't have and was doubled over in pain) but my nutritionist warned me to expect them for the first six weeks as did the psych consult. They were really clear that depression and mood swings were absolutely normal and to be expected and wanted to make sure I'd reach out if I was having trouble with them. My nut said that the mood swings were in part because there's a lot of estrogen stored in fat and rapid weight loss can cause PMS like symptoms. I have to admit it was the first thing they said that really gave me pause. It was not a description I took lightly. My first week of weight loss has felt a little slow, so that's been discouraging based on the pain etc but I'm looking forward (???) to those mood swings that mean the weight loss is going well.

- Oh and about the family eating thing? I'm soooo with you! I've been staying with my parents while I recover and while I'm choking down Protein drinks that taste AWFUL (am I the only one who thinks powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury has an aftertaste that tastes like bile???) my mother is making her usual unbelievably excellent french and Mediterranean cooking. I don't think I ever really appreciated what an amazing cook she is before.

9 days post op. Feeling weak, any suggestions? I was fine until last night touching through the liquid phase like everyone one does while cooking yummy food for everyone else in the family, ????and then it hit me. I truly am not getting enough Proteins in I know for a fact, I hate all 22 of the Protein Drinks I've tried. But will stomach about 25 grams a day, to today I got in 45g. But I walk slow, there's nothing wrong with my legs! Lol! I don't talk to the kids, In fact I answer everyone pleasantly but with a three four word answer max. I am so weak. Now everyone goes through this two week liquid phase, but I don't understand why I was fine and chugging along until last night and then boom! I'm done with it. I don't even care about the soft food stage at this point , which before was my goal! Strange or normal?

I think we all have our own normal. I do know that the nurse who called to check on me after the surgery was extremely clear (to the point of insistent) that I make sure to get 60 grams of Protein a day and 64 oz of liquid and that without it things could get bad... she was threatening me with saline IVs and things like that. I have also found that not all Protein drinks are the same. Some I can keep down far better than others. I have better luck with Muscle Milk than the other's I've tried so far myself. For instance I can tell you that from my perspective Premier Protein literally tastes better on the way up (and out) than on the way down... and the powder tends to taste a little better to me than the premixed stuff. I also started adding coconut Water into my liquids because it's extremely hydrating and has all the electrolytes and stuff needed for maximum absorption. It did seem to help me.

I'd call my doctor if I were you. They might have other options. For instance I started mixing the unjury unflavored Protein in with instant pudding mix (and adding a TBSP of P2B powder as Peanut Butter totally covers that nasty after taste) in order to help get extra protein in.

I'm really sorry pritidev - I just reread your post... I hear you taking care of everyone else. Who's taking care of you? You had major surgery. Of course you're tired. You need to recover. I know parenting doesn't come with vacations but holy moly this is a lot to recover from. I really hope someone is looking after you too.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
