Hi, I was wondering if any of you guys had outpatient surgery for your sleeves? I'm worried about the pain after surgery, but I really don't have an extra five grand to stay overnight lol. Was outpatient completely terrible, or bearable?

Thanks!

I posted this in two sections because I wasn't sure where I'd get the mos responses

I'm pre-op. I've done everything, I just don't have a surgery date yet. Hopefully we won't have too much pain.

I had outpatient surgery and it went fabulous!! Hospital beds are not comfortable anyways! There is nothing like being in the comfort of your own home!

I was in-patient but I had very little pain so I likely could have done outpatient. Sleeved Monday AM, discharged Weds around lunch. I only hit the IV pain meds three times in two days. I took an oral narcotic pain med right before discharge since I had an hour plus ride home. I took one pain med that night to make sure I slept well. I never needed another pain pill including Tylenol.

I was lucky and did not get the gas pains most people get. Since I was over an hour from my surgeon it would not have made sense to do outpatient. He came and checked me every day, the NUT came on discharge day to go over my diet for the next 2 weeks, I had a woman that came a couple of times a day for my breathing thing to prevent pneumonia plus the hospitalist who was monitoring my blood pressure to determine when I would start those meds again. Since I was so far from the bariatric surgeon and hospital I would not have been comfortable doing outpatient. If I was closer that might have been different.

I was kept overnight, but probaby could have gone home. I was the first one in for sugery at 7am, in recovery by 8:30 and in my room by noon, so honestly I could have just gone home late afternoon. Other than the fact that I was super sleepy, I wasn't in any real pain. I was up and walking the halls at like 1pm and lost count of how many times I walked the circuit.

I had no pain at all. It was weird. Just mild discomfort. The doc said they made a point of removing as much of the gas from the abdomen as possible as that is usually what causes the pain, so as long as your doc does the same, you should be okay with just normal pain meds taken orally at home.

My doc sent me home with codine and some other opioid that I took once just because I thought maybe the hospital drugs might wear off, but still no pain hours later, so I just put in the medicine cabinet.

Hi! I was sleeved on 4/27and went home the same day. I also was worried and had no idea what to expect as far as pain, but I did very well. I was up and walking within 2-3 hrs of the surgery. Yes, I had pain, but it was bearable and it was very nice to go home, although I spent several nights only being able to sleep on my back b/c of the pain from the incisions. If I was on my back I didn't have the pain. My doctor administered a local pain block that lasted at least a couple of days. I think that made a huge difference in my being able to go home the same day.

My experience was great! It's totally doable having outpatient procedure if you have someone to take care of you and you take you pain meds. Good luck!

I had outpatient surgery on 6/25/15 and my experience was great. They sent a nurse to check on me later that evening and all was well.

My surgery was outpatient just last week. The pain was nowhere near as bad as I anticipated. That was literally one of the first thoughts I had when I woke up. It wasn't pain-free but bearable. I had to start liquids immediately (ice chips) and walk around the recovery area. Once I did that and burped, I was discharged (maybe two hours after surgery). From that day to now, I have not vomited. The gas pains have been rough at times but didn't last long.

I feel like I can get a nice amount of liquid down these days but Protein has been an issue. My hair has been shedding a lot yesterday (scary) and a little today but I managed to finally get more Protein today. Hopefully that'll continue and I can minimize hair shedding.

Happy I did this as an outpatient though because being home helped and my mom is really spoiling me these days!

My surgery went the complete opposite. I had my outpatient surgery on the 23rd, and ended up not being able to take my pain medicine or get any fluids down once I got home, due to swelling, and had to be readmitted for severe dehydration and pain management (gastric sleeve surgery with no pain medicine sucks). 20 IV sticks (worst dehydration case the hospital had seen) and a torrdal shot later I was fine, but I should have done inpatient in the first place

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
