How much can you eat?

Recommended Posts

Hi!!

As I posted before on April 25 I had a failed gastric sleeve that had to be converted in a MGB on May 13. Well, my question is: How much can you eat? Because it seems I can eat a lot of food for a WLS patient. If I eat slowly 30-45mns I can ingest maybe 12-14 ounces of healthy food, but when I compare it to my gastric sleeve I could only eat 3-4 ounces. I´m still losing weight, 2 to 3 pounds per week, but I eat very healthy and exercise daily. Certain food like baby carrots don´t seem to go down easily, 3 or 4 of them and I have to stop eating. I have not tried beef yet.

I can't eat a half of cup of food, more like 3 bites is going over board. I am almost 2 weeks post sleeve.

This is a great topic.

I am 8.5 months post op. In the beginning I was lucky if I could get 1/4 cup in. As the swelling in my tummy went down i noticed I could eat more depending on what I was eating. For example, if I eat Soup, yogurt or soft foods I can eat 3/4 to 1 cup at this point. If I eat meat like chicken, fish, beef, pork I can eat maybe a half a cup.

My nut actually cleared a lot of this up for me as well. She mentioned and continues to tell me this. You have to think about the amount of food you are ingesting after it is chewed up because that is actually how it enters your tummy. the volume of food you eat post chewing is actually more than if you just measured it.

which if you think about this it makes sense.

I no longer measure my food. I know what my stomach can tolerate and I have learned over time to eat slowly (no more than 30 minutes) and pay attention to whether or not I am satiated. If you do that, all the measuring stuff which I did religiously in the beginning won't be necessary.

I never take longer than 30 minutes because your pouch begins to empty at that point. If you continue to eat past that point you could in fact be over eating. This was one of the rules my Bariatric team drilled into my head and I follow religiously. You could literally eat all day and eat around the new tool you have.

I also steer clear of any fluids 30 minutes before and after eating so I don't flush my food before my body has a chance to absorb the nutrients.

  • That it's a great answer, I won´t eat past the 30mn mark. I have also red about fluids before and after eating. I'll stick to your advice!!

At 18 months out, the most I can eat of anything is one cup in about thirty minutes. But.....if I don't space myself out with Water in-between meals, it would be too easy to eat again in another thirty minutes, like djmohr just said.

I'm a revision too and I can eat A LOT ! I can eat a 6" flat bread from subway and chips no problem, today I had an entire Cesar salad kit for lunch, I really don't notice that I can eat any less that I could with my sleeve which was already stretched out. It's crazy because Iv seen my xrays and I really don't even have a stomach at all, I have a very small pouch that empties into my intestines. Sometimes if I don't chew well I do get a terrible stuck feelings that brings back my PTSD from my lapband ! My bypass was almost 9' though so I lose weight because everything I eat goes right through me more less.

I also have a 9' bypass. When I talked about it with my surgeon about this subject he asked me "What percentage of what you use to eat are you eating?" Yes, it's a lot less, but I feel if I didn't eat healthy I could easily gain weight.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
