Life after the sleeve

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone-

My surgery date is July 7th and I am so excited for my new tummy! However I have a few questions for those of you who are years/lots of months post op-

I'm only 22 and a recent graduate of college, but I know that a way to connect with old friends is by catching up at happy hour/celebrating an engagement or wedding - how do yall handle carbonation? Here in Texas, girls love beer and when I Celebrate special occasions I like to toast with champagne- will I ever be able to handle that?

I was told no alcohol for a year, and never again if possible. There is research correlating WLS and alcoholism. Addiction transference. Your new stomach will get you drunk and sober you up quickly, making it easy to go back for seconds, thirds, etc throughout the night.

I'm not saying you'll never be able to enjoy yourself again but drinking with your friends will never be the same. It's an activity/behavior you'll have to accept drastically altering. Not easy at such a young age when all you and your friends want to do is go out and have a good time. As you get older it will become less important :) good luck.

I was told you should never have carbonated drinks bc it will stretch your stomach. As far as drinking alcohol my nutritionist said I could try wine at week 6 post op. At home of course to make sure your stomach agrees with it. I would say you probably won't be able to have beer again!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
