Post op Smoking & Cheating. HELP!

Recommended Posts

Okay I'm human... I'm scheduled to be sleeved June 30th and I'm nervous! For 2 main reasons. Number 1 I stopped smoking the day after they scheduled my surgery. (June 5th) & they told me to stop smoking. I stopped. But than started again June 11th and stopped today. I know I shouldn't of started again! Also, this liquid diet. I cheated the FIRST DAY did great the 2nd 3rd and 4th and than (ate cheese and turkey those days as well) but last night I ate a pork chop, Mac and cheese, and green beans! I was starving. But now I'm worried about my liver not being well. So many things running through my mind! I need some one to tell me their experiences! I've lost 8 pounds so far on pre op and I have 7 days to go still!

I would be honest with your surgeon about the smoking and go from there.

Hope it all works out for you

It is really tough trying to quit smoking and being on the pre-op diet at the same time. Please stay away from guns and knives. Of course, we all know the reasons for not smoking and believe me you will want your new stomach to heal as fast as possible so you can start eating again. No only will you be on liquids for pre-op but you will also spend a considerable amount of time being on them after surgery. The docs want you to have a successful outcome. It is bad enough to cheat on pre-op but if you do these things on a new baby stomach you could land in life/death consequences. So, just back away from the yummyness and go out and purchase a vape without nicotine (or very low dose). The vape will give you something to do with your mouth and your hands and help make your cessation program successful. I quit smoking last September. The vape was invaluable for the first 6 weeks. Now I am free and clear and on my way to a new healthy me with my new baby stomach! We are on your side. You can do this!

@@Shustar thanks so much! I cheated like 3 out of 7 of my preop days. I haven't smoke at all today and have 7 days till surgery. Trying my hardest to finish this week off strong is the best I can do even with my liver concerns!

Get a prescription for Chantix. Both my husband and I stopped with absolutely no problem in March. This was a requirement of surgery and our adoption. I only needed to take it for about a month, then I stopped. I cab truly say I week never smoke again. In the past, we did child turkey, vape pens, etc. This was amazing!

It's so hard trying to quit smoking and not being able to eat what you want at the same time. I was doing my 3 month doctor supervised diet while I was trying to quit. I used the vape. I just tapered down until I had no nicotine at all. Then just stopped. You should try buying a vapor cig with no nicotine just so you have something to do with your hands instead of wanting to eat.

Oh, and I still managed to lose 5lbs in the 3 months. Not a lot, but darn it, I did it! It wasn't easy!

Good luck to you!

I'm going to put your mind at ease a little. My surgeon doesn't even do a liver shrinking diet. Just Clear Liquids the day before, and nothing past midnight.

That doesn't mean you can ignore your particular surgeons advice to follow your diet. But I just thought that tid bit of info would make you feel a little better :)

If I understand correctly, smoking is the issue but not nicotine for surgery. My husband quit cigarettes and switched to vaping. You might see if that is a compromise your surgeon can accept. Regarding the pre-op diet, the liver shrinking is a very real need. Try to keep it low fat and low carb. You only get one shot at this. You can do this.

Wow, I'm having a hard enough time with food. I can't imagine trying to balance restricting two things at once!

Because you're having such a difficult time, I would definitely try to build a support system of friends and families. If you need to find a buddy on here, do so! Text them *before* you make a bad decision and let them talk you out of it! It might be the distraction you need. You're not alone, we're here for you!
