Hi,

I was just banded on June 13th. I was okayed to start on soft foods at my post op appointment after losing 15 lbs in 10 days. But I attempted a scrambled egg, I think it was too dry, or I forgot to chew really well? But the minute I swallowed I felt the pain in my sternum and it seemed that the piece was stuck? I ate a few more bites chewing well, and tried a small amount of Water. But the water was just coming back up. It hurt pretty bad. I felt nauseated and after spending 10 days trying not to vomit had to. After a few times the egg felt like it free. But later that night I tried to eat again, and seemed to be able to eat about 1 1/2 cups of smoshed potatoes. Compared to my 1/4 cup previose to that experience. I continue to seem to be able to eat more at a time, and am worried that I did something? I can't find much info about the slipping that I have heard about? Is it possible that I caused the band to slip and that is why I am now able to eat more? Anybody else had these experiences? I am also still not able to get much soft foods thru without feeling like something is getting stuck, that is a scary feeling so I have gone back to more of the liquid diet. Any suggestions? Will eating soft foods get easier to go down? I am worried if they do an adjustment if I will have to just stay on liquid? Also, I was thinking the band is at the bottom of the new pouch, so why does it feel like the food sticks before it goes into the stomach?

Any feedback is good! Thanks!

I remember when I thought that too. You need to do a thread search or an itnernet search so you can see pictures of how the band is placed on the top of the stomach.

You do need to go back on liquids for 24 hours. It's always recommended after vomiting. You need to remember to chew until it's liquid. I don't know why you would be getting food stuck at this early stage though. You haven't had a fill yet, I am assuming? Getting food stuck is something we bandsters always have to deal with, and yes it does hurt. The thing to remember is to take tiny itty bitty bites and chew until it's liquid.

It sounds to me as if you're doing fine. I have read several threads on this site where people talk about their stomach's being able to hold a large amount of food before their first fill and then some say that it takes them a couple of fills so you are normal. I would advise you to just keep in mind that you are working on a change of life, habits and weight loss and try to eat smaller healthier meals. If anything make sure you get in your Protein and veggies and eat slower. Chew your food until it is mushy which can happen in 30 to 50 chews in my opinion especially if its a chicken breast, the book said only 20 to 30 but a few more chews has never hurt anybody. Remember not to drink 30 minutes before or until 1 hour after your meal. Stay focused! Keep in mind that you have worked this hard to get this far and that there is no turning back. Eat smart. Lose Weight. Be Healthy. It's all in your hands.:whoo:

eggs are *really* hard for many bandsters. I would suggest not eating them until your stomach is strong enough to PB. Really, it's NEVER a good idea to PB but it is sooo important not to PB while healing.

Anytime you vomit/PB don't eat or drink anything at all for a few hours, then finish the day with liquids only. Not even soft foods, just liquids.

;) I appreciate the advice. I called the dr and she said like you guys to take smaller bites, and chew really well. I am still concerned about the gaining weight back, but I think I read that when the stomach heals you can eat more. So I am hoping a fill will help in a few weeks to reduce my hunger. I feel hungry more often now. I haven't had any more stuck food since the egg incident. I think I scared myself into taking smaller bites, being sure to chew.

Chkn seems to the easiest meat. Besides like a tuna salad for Protein. I am still doing at least one protien shake a day to be sure to get enough. The drinking and eating thing is a challange. It is habit to drink and eat at the same time.

Ok, this may seem like a silly question, but what does PB stand for? I keep seeing it on these boards and only got my band on 6/25. Seems like something to avoid, but what IS IT?! thanks!

Pb-ing means Productive Burping. In other words---food coming back up (not exactly like vomiting) Everyone PB situation is different..normally mine is because I have let myself go to long between meals..and I eat my first bite a little too fast w/o chewing it properly..and then the slime begins..eeww!

Hi: I agree with the thought your should have mushies for a few days. You are not that far away from sugery and the instructions I got was clear fluids, fluids, mushies and solid food after one month. You have a lot of healing to do with the stiches holding the band and scar tissue has to develop to hold the band. Don't rush the solids, better to eat mushies more often than to PB. If you like eggs, try "poached". I never have a problem with them. Doddie.

I think you may be experiencing the resumption of your appetite. After the surgery, I had no appetite and I thought that was a result of the band and that I was feeling true restriction. After a week or so, my appetite returned with a vengence and I had no restiriciton (but did have sticking and even PB'd once). Then I looked on this site and realized that I shouldn't expect to have an restriction until one or more fills. I just got my second fill today (I'm on liquides for the day) and will soon see if I have restriction. Read about "bandster hell" on this site for more tales on this subject. Good luck!

The reason for liquids is so that lesions can for around your band to aid in keeping it in place.

If you eat or drink to much you continue to loosen it from you body also PBing does the same only much more violently.

Getbandednow does a mini fill at the time of placement this aids in restriction and for some eliminates the first and second fill entirely. But you gotta follow the program. Matt

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
