My surgeons office said it was for a "few months" but didn't give more detail than that. I'm more irrationally upset at the no straws than I am at the no sodas. Heh.

Lots of people on this site have reported that they have broken this rule with no apparent consequence. I haven't tested it because I don't really miss straws. I'll save my rebellion for something that matters to me.

My nutritionist said that straws can introduce air into the stomach which can stretch the sleeve or create nausea. She recommended waiting til 2-3 months out. I waited until 5 weeks out and then tried the straw. I get no nausea and no more air than I did drinking without it. I am better able to get my fluids in with a straw than without so for me it worked out. Good luck!

I am one year post-op and occasionally drink through a straw. I have experienced no apparent consequences.

This is another of those things that is different with every surgeon. Mine says it's fine.

Not only do straws introduce air..but we tend to gulp or swallow to much with a straw. ..

Straws can have you swallow extra air, but only what is in the straw itself. As a nurse, what I tell my patients who want to drink through a straw to simply fill it first before drinking.

Just had my follow-up and asked my nut about straws and she said if it helps it's ok to use. I would gauge your reaction to it, if it causes you a lot of gas or discomfort. I have no issues drinking from straws and I'm 5 weeks out.

My doctor said that straws were not banned but that they will increase gas issues and make you fill full faster. I decided to sip for a few weeks.

I hate, hate, hate Water and will only drink it with a straw. It hasn't caused me any problems yet. I don't like Crystal Light or any of those other things either. Prior to surgery I only ever drank diet soda.

Now I'm drinking lots of plain Water with lots of ice but it has to have a straw. I haven't had any issues with gas or burping or anything like that.

I was drinking from a straw on my way home from the hospital with no issues. I think it is another one of those things that is different for everyone. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
