Don't know where to start for July 20th surgery

Recommended Posts

I have read over a lot of posts on here and am so confused about what I need to start buying for my surgery. I also have the 14 days of liquid diet before surgery. 3 shakes a day and 1 meal no more than 350 calories. I have no clue what to buy. Some people say don't mix a shake in the blender it makes it to foamy. How do you mix it ? There are tons of Vitamins out there, how do I know if it had the right amount of nutrients I need ? How many different kinds of Shake favors do I start with ? Is it mixed with Water or milk ? I feel lost and haven't even started yet.

Usually your nutritionist gives you a diet plan. Have you met with them yet? Try sample sizes of shakes as for some their taste changes after surgery. You can get some idea of what you might like now.

For your pre-op meals you want good Protein in meats and non-starchy veggies. Watch portion sizes.

Drink as much Water as you can, get at least 64 ounces of Fluid in a day.

There is a video on how to make your shake not foamy on you tube...look for it.

Your surgeons office should also tell you what Vitamins to take. Ask them for the plan.

Yes they gave me a general plan. I know what kind of Vitamins I need to take also. My point really is that there are so many brands. Is one better than the other. Is the value better with a certain brand than the other ?

My recommendation would be to go to the powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury website or my bariatric pantry and purchase some sample packs so you can get an idea about taste. Before surgery, I wouldn't have thought twice about using a magic bullet/blender to make shakes. Now that I'm a few (barely) days past surgery, I wouldn't want all of the extra air introduced. I bought some premier Protein shakes (Vanilla) at costsco and have been trying to drink those. They seem really sweet to me.

You can get a sample pack of Syntrax nectar shakes directly from the manufacturer.

The first couple of weeks post-surgery I lived on premier Protein (you can get them at sam's Club or Walmart), ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrate (my surgeon's office had them and I also ordered them from Bariatric Choice), ProtiDiet Tomato basil and chicken Soups (also from Bariatric Choice), and WonderSlim Dark chocolate pudding (Bariatric Choice).

As others mentioned unjury has sample packs available from their website.

I like GNC Lean 25. I think the GNC stores can let you sample some of the flavors. I buy GNC shakes and Quest Protein Bars (which you can try once you are on solid/crunchy foods, through Drugstore.com. This is also where I got some shaker bottles. I have a couple of different blenders but use the shaker bottles to mix my shakes most of the time.

I also got some small (1/2 cup storage containers), appetizer spoons, and some sushi plates, and small rice bowls. Some people like toddler dishes but I like more grown-up dishes. That said, the gerber graduate lidded bowls are good for leftovers.

For my hospital/post-surgery bag I got: lip balm, a heating pad, gas-x, and biotine spray.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
