Iliterally just decided that this was right for me. I have always had really good self esteem and told myself that this was for health reasons. But, man, since I have decided to go forward, all of a sudden I feel fat and ugly and all I can think k about is how good I'll look skinny. I thought finally deciding would make me feel good, but, fat it is!

Your only human don't be so hard on yourself. Surgery is a life changing tool for living a healthier lifestyle. I just got my surgery date and I admit I have also thought I just want to be thin so I can look good. I think that is okay also and healthy. We are going to physically feel so much better and that will come out in our self esteem as well. I was didn't struggle with obesity as a child or very young adult it wasn't until around 25 that I started piling on the pounds and I didn't really have a bad image of myself either. It wasn't until five or six months ago that I saw a video a family member had taken and all of a sudden it hit me I am fat and I can't possibly live another 40 years like this I will never make it and thought how ashamed my thin fit adult and young children are of me. Of course that's not the case lol. Keep your chin up. Don't be so hard on yourself your making a good decision now and you deserve this.

I feel similar! So looking forward to new clothes and such. My husband keeps saying stuff like "but it's about being healthy, right?" Well yes but the smaller clothes part is what is keeping me going during this frustrating pre and post op diet part!

I understand what you mean. The moment I decided that this is the direction I'm going, all the sudden I feel fatter and hungrier and my body hurts more. But then I'm also excited and find myself wondering if I can really be a normal weight for once in my life. I've never been a normal weight(since I was 4 anyway) so the idea of being skinny is still such a foreign concept I don't know what to do with it. I look at my teen daughter and wonder "will I look like her?" "Is that even possible?!?" I cannot fathom it yet.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
