Cardiac Clearance

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

This is my second posting and I am scheduled for surgery on June 24th (this coming Wednesday!).

I received a call from m y surgeons office this morning that "my pre-op testing EKG showed some discrepancies" and my doctor wants me to see a cardiologist for clearance. I see the cardiologist on Monday at 3:00. I am not officially freakin. I can't imagine what could be wrong and I am anxious that I won't receive the clearance. I am 34 years old and in general good health. I do have some co-morbitites but they are medically managed. Did anyone else encounter this? Heart disease runs in my family but no one my age has ever exhibited symptoms so young.

Matt

Hi Matt (@uurbz) don't worry. Sometimes EKG leads can be..mis-leading pardon the pun. However any discrepancy in the reading is always cause for concern when a surgery is pending.

I have some irregularities with my heart rate and my EKG often comes up with something that raises a red flag depending on who is doing the reading. As part of my approval for surgery I had to have a cardiologist do a work up and approve.

Try not to worry, sometimes the simplest thing like being dehydrated or having an elecrolyte imbalance can cause an irregular reading on an EKG.

Let us know how things go after you see the Dr.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
