Anyone else's post op like this?

Recommended Posts

In just had my NUT appointment yesterday. I'm concerned. All the books I've read, forums, and websites I've read say four stages of post op diet. liquid, puréed, soft, and then solids.

Apparently my surgeon skips all of those! He does ice until I can keep it down, then 24 hour liquid diet, then straight to soft foods for a month.

I'm in shock, panic, utter disbelief! Is this safe?! I'm so nervous now!

Help help please help! Anyone else's like this?

I have heard of that before for sleeve patients although like you it would make me very nervous.

I bet you hear from others that have found themselves in that situation and will get more info.

I was bypass and was on Clear liquids for 7 days post op. Of course we started with ice but by late evening they had me try broth 2 tablespoons at a time. The reality is you certainly don't feel like trying any of it for a day or so.

Good luck and I hope you get some responses that are helpful.

Do you know anyone who has used this surgeon? I would look for recommendations. That's scary. You are having gastric bypass or the sleeve?

I did Clear Liquids for a week then full liquids and then at week three soft foods. At 6 weeks I go to normal diet. And all of this is just a guideline. When I went to soft foods if I didn't tolerate it well I could always go back to liquids and try again in a week. Listen to your body. Look at your states board of medical license and see if your doc has had any lawsuits filed against him.

I did clears in the hospital but was discharged on the full liquid diet for 10 days then moved to smushie foods. Honestly, i had smushies before 10 days and I was fine. And now I am having some more normal foods like chili and hamburger meat. I had bypass by the way. I think it's a matter of what you can handle. And if you don't feel comfortable with it then stay with the liquids or smushies. They can't force you to eat something you don't want to. But all doctors do things differently.

I think it's better to go slow and follow the stages...it is designed that way for good healing.

As others have said...listen to your body!!! It will let you know real fast if something isn't going right. I was on clear liquids for 7 days then full liquids for couple weeks then pureed foods and just now to soft foods and my surgery was May 1st. I still am having trouble eating and have to go real slow.

My surgeon's team does clear liquids only in hospital. Full liquids for week 1 then move into purees start of week 2. Then soft foods week 3 for 6 weeks. I have had no issues with this method. Follow your surgeon's plan. There are great differences in plans so follow yours.

Everyone's surgeon has a difference of post op diets, it depends on their preference, they use experience and previous data, his surgery is still fairly new and there is not enough research to substantiate diets, or long term results, mine was 1w liquid, 2w full liquid, and this Wednesday I started on 2w soft, my nurse used a different surgeon and was on soft by week 2, but it doesn't ran you have to do it, if you feel (which you will) like you can't eat anything and prefer Water or Soups then stick with that too ur tummy is ready, don't go too fast it will hurt you

I did bypass at a center of excellence. My surgeon was the founder of the center and has been in the business for decades. His program's guidelines are unique, from what I've read here. No shakes, no liquid pre-op phase, straight to purees/soft foods. I had scrambled eggs in the hospital the morning after surgery and was working out at the gym after a week. My recovery was a breeze with no complications. Now I am 6 months out and have lost 105 pounds.

Every surgeon is different and so is every patient. I think this is particularly true of the surgeons who have been at it for a long time and have learned what works best with their particular surgical / cutting style and habits. Follow your program and no one else's.

My plan was clear liquids 1-3 days. Full liquids for 1-3 weeks, puree for a week, soft for a week, then normal. However, I have started each phase early because I have tolerated everything really well and just felt like it was time to move on each time I did. I am 2.5 weeks out and already eating soft canned chicken, thicker mashed potatoes, egg, well toasted bread, etc.

I feel like my body really told me when I was ready to move on. Everyone is different. I wouldn't worry about your plan - just take it slow if anything isn't sitting well with you. I think it's fine to move at your own pace, faster or slower

In the hospital I was on full liquids to continue for 2 weeks. 2 weeks on soft stuff then regular within reason.

I'm 4 days out and feeling pretty good.

I also saw everyone had varying diets -- and just wound up trying to stick the best I could to my nutritionist's recommendations. I figure everyone has different plans, bodies, and doctors, and I am by no means an expert, so I ultimately decided to just follow what my bariatric team instructed (usually).

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
