Weightloss before surgery

Recommended Posts

Dr is sending me to a dietician to put me on a diet before if God willing they approve my surgery and my husband doesn't get laid off. Anyways has anyone lost 20+ lbs being on their diet? Also, my biggest fear is getting denied surgery or my husband getting laid off and losing our insurance. Did yall find the whole process beneficial and rewarding in helping your weight loss goals?

If your requirement was similar to mine (liquid diet for 2 weeks) -- even with some exercise I think that could be difficult. Do you have to lose 20lbs to get accepted for it? I wasn't able to stick to the liquid diet strictly for 2 weeks, and cheated some.

I was able to lose 13 lbs in 10 days on the liquid diet required by my surgeon. I never cheated once, it is too important to shrink your fatty liver before this surgery.

Also I did lose another 15 lbs in the 6 months supervised diet just by changing some bad habits.

Trust me when I tell you it is all well worth it. If you stay on track with all your appointments it may help with the lay off thing as well.

I was laid off right smack in the middle of my 6 month supervised diet but thankfully was given a severance package that extended my insurance so I was able to get it all done on time.

You must be on top of all your appointments and doing what you are supposed to. If you want it bad enough you can make it happen.

That time goes by very very fast.

I lost 15 pounds in the liquid diet. I found it very helpful mentally. I learned a lot about why I ate. I am now only a week post op and I think had I not done the 2 weeks pre op it would be much harder. Pre op I told myself I couldn't have solid food and now post op I don't have much issues with telling myself no. Hope that makes sense.

I started my journey on 4/16. When I was weighed on 6/26, I lost a total of 20 lbs. This was mainly due to a lot of dietary changes over that period of time: no fast food, limiting carbs, increasing Protein, removing sugar. Once I get a surgery date, I need to go on a 2 week liquid diet. I'm told I can lose another 10-15 lbs during this time. From what I am told, the more weight I lose before surgery makes the surgery go that much easier. If that is what I need to do to make the surgeon's job easier, I am going to do it!

I list 20 lbs on the liquid diet. It was worth every bit of it because it gave me the will power to get through those first few weeks.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
