I've drank bourbon straight up 3x now since surgery. It is very high in calories so one really needs to watch what they're doing where is concerned. My doctors thought on alcohol is to abstain because of a possible dependency.

We have the same doctor.

Cool! Where are you in the process?

It was supposed to be July 6 but she called me today with a cancellation so now I am moved up to June 29

So they moved your surgery date up? Very cool! Congrats!

Thank you. And then I panic realizing it's only a week and a half away. When you get there it's not as far away as you think.

From what I see you will be in good hands. Bring Chapstick for the recovery room. That was a tip I was told today. Your lips get very dry in recovery and you only get that 1oz cup of liquid 1 an hour for 4 hours. I realy likeed the office manager Lynne. She was a hoot.

My surgeon approved me for coffee at 10 days post-op. I now drink 1/2 cup to 1 cup of coffee in the morning with the same amount of hot skim milk. :)

I had no alcohol until 5.5 months post-op. Since then I have 4 ounces of wine 4-5 days a week.

I reached my weight loss goal at 8.5 months post-op. I'm now 4-5 pounds below goal. Doing great. :)

Consumption of coffee/caffeine seems to be an issue only with doctors in the US. I've never heard of any doctor in the UK even mentioning it. I have always had at least two cups a day and it has never caused me any problems.

I rarely drink alcohol anyway, so that's not been an issue either, but I don't recall the dietician mentioning it other than in the context of empty calories.

As always I just think it's a case of 'moderation in all things'.

That is the big thing I learned today at the 6 hour boot camp my surgeon runs at Signature Medical in Brockton MA.

My surgeon is out of Norwood Hospital in MA -- not too far!

I'm only a few weeks out. I quit caffeinated Diet Coke a few months ago and quit all Diet Coke for my liquid diet. I've missed it a bit but I'm not doing too bad without it. Haven't asked my surgeon or NUT yet about long-term if I can go back to caffeine or carbonation or anything. I'm not even going to try anything like that until at least 6 months post-op -- we'll see!

My guidebook says to avoid caffein and carbonation. Liquor in moderation is allowed after 3 months. There is a warning about those metabolic changes and sugar content of mixed drinks.

I drink a cup of coffee with Protein Powder as Creamer every morning. I drink socially a couple times per week, but I have to be really careful with those calories. That is the first thing that has to go if I gain a couple of pounds. It can happen FAST if you're not paying attention!

Howdy neighbor. I have already given up the diet coke. I do not miss it as much as i thought I would. Thanks for the info and good luck.

I was allowed caffeine at 30 days post-op. Initially told to dilute my coffee heavily with cream and only one cup a day, but allowed to increase my intake as tolerated. I now drink 3 cups a day at 9 months post-op.

I was allowed alcohol at 2 months post-op. Obviously in moderation and cautioned about drinking my calories. Also, nothing carbonated.

That is the big thing I learned today at the 6 hour boot camp my surgeon runs at Signature Medical in Brockton MA.

From past experiences I know my Mom n law who had a gastric bypass drank..that ended badly for a lot of reason..and my Brother in law also has a gastric bypass does drinks booze and coffee does fine . A friend who is sleeved and 2 yrs post op has an occasional drink of caffinated coffee and cocktails..like daquris's not burbon...

and she's doing good.

For me..teling me I ABSOLUTLY can not do something has always been like red to a bull. It is my WHOLE issues with weight loss really... It is the only absolutes the progam has post op aside from keeping your appointments.

But I am having a hard time wraping my head around it.

I have already given up diet coke. Is keeping my one cup of coffee a day and an occasinal glass of wine to much to hope for?

The brightside I learned today was there is NO pre op liquid diet.

I was told neither of those things. I don't drink but I love coffee. I was told however that liquid calories in the form of coffee drinks and alcohol are one of the 4 ways regain happens (the others being grazing, drinking while eating and not eating protein). I am allowed to have coffee post op immediately but was told to keep it to 2 cups a day for 6 months which I think is doable! I had the band and was very successful for a years but I have to say that when you have restriction alcohol and liquid calories are very very tempting!

Yeah I can see how a Mocha Frapuchino would add to regain..But all I am looking for is a single cup a day with a little half and half and a sweetener like stevia.

I plan on doing this with fat free half and half. My nut said some people don't have a taste for coffee for a while.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
