HopeandAgony 566 Posted June 17, 2015 Hi. I've got an odd issue going on. I haven't been sleeved yet but I am following a 2 Protein Shake a day diet (followed up with a normal healthy meal). I've been doing this about a month now to lose the weight required prior to surgery. The past 10 days I've had mild to moderate urinary discomfort (burning with urination and discomfort in between). Bad enough I went to the Dr to have a urinalysis done. I've had UTI's before so was confident that's what I had. (No, it's not an STD either) Results came back normal. Dr said its possibly from the Protein shakes. Anyone else have any experience with this and what did you do? I am using 100% egg protein, and each shake has about 25 grams of protein in it. I drink 2 per day and eat a normal dinner. I am drinking 64+Oz of Water per day. Thanks in advance.
AvaFern 3,516 Posted June 17, 2015 Did your doctor at least give you UTI antibiotics? My urethra hates me and I get UTI's a few times a year. As a point of possibly TMI, I have had 2 UTI's in the last month. One of them I didn't even need the test because there was blood in the urine, but the test came back positive, the second time earlier this week, the test was negative, but within 24 hours of taking antibiotics, my symptoms had started to clear up. A UTI test doesn't always pick up the problem so maybe ask your doctor to give you some antibiotics and see if it helps clear it up. Also, you can take those AZO tablets at the drug store. They turn your urine orange, which is weird, but they do help relieve some of the symptoms. Oh and a heating pad between my legs does wonders for the urgency and burning feeling. Past that, I have not had any issues with Protein shakes causing that sort of problem, at least to my knowledge. Hope you feel better!
Sajijoma 1,324 Posted September 2, 2015 It could be small kidney stones or sediment. High Protein can cause kidney stones and the little ones may be small as a grain of sand, so you cannot see it, but your body will definitely feel the irritation. You can either strain your pee to see if you find any sediment using a cheese cloth and a coffee filter or you could try(with your dr's permission) trying to take a supplement to break down kidney stones. I use Stone Break and it has cut down on the frequency of my stones also being hyper vigilant not to get UTI's since my stones are caused by UTI's so I take cram clearance as a preventative which then prevents stones, BUT if you get stones formed by Proteins, taking cranberry can actually cause more stones because they are high in oxolate so be aware of that. The best thing would be to strain your urine and find sediment or a stone that can be tested so they can tell you what kind it is and how best to avoid it If it is one!
