Just curious. Getting sleeved in September. Taking meds for Hypertension. How soon after the surgery did everyone with HBP stop taking meds, and regulated BP? Thanks

3 weeks after I was cut back on diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol. Next visit will probably be taken off completely.

Wow 3 weeks?! That's so awesome. I'm getting sleeved on July 2nd and I have high blood pressure.

I am the not-normal one in this respect. Although my recovery has gone flawlessly, I am still on my blood pressure meds at 18 months. Even though my nutritional values, thyroid, and blood count numbers were sweet, my cholesterol was still sky high. My primary said until my cholesterol backs off, I have to take the meds.

I was at the bariatric clinic last week for my 18 month check-up, and they took blood for the lab. I got the report back on Monday. All of my numbers are good, and cholesterol is now in the perfectly mid-line normal range. The bariatric physician had forewarned me that because I am post-stroke, I may never drop the BP meds unless numbers dip low. Oh, well.

I was 2 weeks post op and my dr had me cut pills in half. I'm 5 weeks post op and hope that my dr. will cut me off completely next visit. Can't wait to be rid of them.

What about acid reflux meds. Anyone taken off of those since WLS?

I took myself off my BP meds 1 week after surgery. I was monitoring my BP at home a couple of times a day. It was staying good without it so I didn't take it.

My cholesterol was 160 prior to surgery so that was not an issue for me.

I was sleeved 2/2/2015 and came off Nexim on my 4/30/2015 visit. I had been on Nexium for 10 months prior to surgery and had a hiatal hernia repaired during surgery.

@@Miss Mac

There's always a difficult one in the crowd ;)

No, seriously. Mine and many others have high blood pressure just from the stress of being overweight, so WLS helps with that for sure. But if yours is hereditary or from some other medical condition like Miss Mac, you may not be able to be taken off so soon like she said. Just depends.

I had to stop my HBP meds prior to surgery, and have not gone back on them. Even with the diastolic dysfunction, my BP has been in a good range sense surgery. Next appointment with PCP is mid-July and we'll be discussing this and the triglycerides and low HDL again after he sees my next set of blood work.

Also came off the Metformin for diabetes immediately and have not restarted any arthritis meds yet - I'm surprised I don't hurt anymore than what I do right now. Granted, with 60 lbs. lost, they say there's less inflammation in the body and less stress on the joints and that could explain my decreased pain level. However, night pain is the worse so I do take pain medication at bedtime so I can get through the night.

I took my BP meds the evening before surgery. Day of surgery I was not given any BP meds in the hospital. My blood pressure was 151/81 consistently after surgery. Day after surgery I was given my regular dose of BP meds while in the hospital. Once home, I was monitoring my BP daily and it was pretty low - 103/65. I saw my regular doc 1 week post op and she reduced my meds. By the time I saw my surgeon, 12 days post op, I was taken completely off the BP meds. I've been consistently "normal."

I'm also not normal LOL. HBP runs in the family and there is according to my doctor a strong genetic component.

I was on a combo pill of 3 different meds. Doc reduced it to a pill that is 2 meds in one. So a decrease of med for sure. He tells me I will likely always need BP meds... as he put it "even skinny people can have HBP".

I did however come off all diabetes meds completely after surgery. At one point I was taking three different pills and 55 units of insulin. Just got my 6 month post op blood work back this week and my a1c is 5.3! ☺️

I was taken off blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes and Fluid medications the morning of surgery and have not been on them since under the watch of my surgeon. I was sleeved May 15th, 2015. Without the medication, my glucose levels are the lowest they have been even while I was on medication. Good luck and I wish you much success. God bless.

I was on 3 BP meds. Diuretic was discontinued the day before surgery, weaning off the beta blocker now, and doc says he will look at statin and ace inhibitor next. Off all diabetic meds and insulins, too. Had the surgery May 21.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
