Losing pounds but do not feel a difference

Recommended Posts

So I started my prep diet at 324 pounds and was 309 the day of surgery. It's fifteen days later and I am down to 294.... But here is my problem; I am not seeing or feeling the lost pounds! I feel the same as I was at 324 and do not notice a change in the way my clothes fit or see a change when I look in the mirror. My husband tells me he can tell I have lost but I just don't see it.

Did this happen to anyone else? Is it just my body image in my head that is not allowing me to see the improvement?

Self image is hard to change in a short period of time. I had the same issue, I could tell I felt a little better and lighter on my feet even, but when I looked in the mirror I still saw the same fat guy as before. My wife kept telling me I needed to try on some of my old clothes, but I told her no. I was too scared that they would still be too small and I'd feel like this surgery wasn't working. Eventually I gave in and found that I could fit into my XXL shirts. I started keeping track of my measurements too which helped me see the numbers I was shedding, not just on the scale, but my dimensions too!

How long ago was your surgery? It can take some time for your body to shed some inches. I really started noticing after week 2.

We all feel this way I think. I don't see a difference from month to month and I take a pic every single month to see the progress. Others say they see it but I don't. Give it time. I think we expect to see super model thin too soon and we need to not only lose weight but tone it up and feel better as well. So now I work out 6 days a week and yesterday was the first time I think I saw some improvements. Give it time. Its not going to be instant Good luck with your journey and don't worry so much about physical changes at the moment. Worry about getting back on the track to healthy and feeling good.

Thanks Veronica! I need to develop some patience and be a little kinder to myself.... I have been so focused on if I look or feel different I have lost some sight of just focusing on being healthy

Definitely be kind as you go through this. For those who are heavy (any of us at start) it can take many pounds lost before progress is seen. Also, those around us (ourselves included) see everyday and don't notice as well because of that.

I would suggest taking pictures every 2-4 weeks to compare that way you can see the difference side by side.

I'm pretty sure seeing myself differently will be my biggest challenge. I will have to work hard to change the picture in my head as my body continues to change.

You are awesome! Doing Fantastic! Keep strong and focus on the non number achievements. They seem to happen at cool times

I think you have a point that the more you weigh at the starting point the harder it can be to see a difference at first! I will try taking pictures to see if I notice anything!! Thanks :)

One of the reasons I have put off weight loss surgery for so long is that I fear that I will hate how I end up more than I hate the fat me now, but I finally realized that even if I don't love the new me naked, I should still live longer and be around my family longer, so that's why I am finally moving forward.

I think we all have a mental image of ourselves and it is hard for us to be realistic. You are losing weight you just may not be losing it where you want to lose it right now. For example I want to lose weight off my big belly first but I bet you $$ that my first weight loss comes off the BOOBS! LOL

Just enjoy the loss where it happens and hope that in the end it all evens out.

I am finally at 22 pounds and can tell a difference in the way my scrub pants feel at work.... And I was able to buckle my seat belt in the work van without my seatbelt extension. So I guess it's little victories for now!!

TXBrittBritt, we had very similar stats starting out. I was 325 at the start of my prep diet, SW 310. I'm 5'8". I was sleeved April 6 though, so about eight weeks before you. I didn't really notice a big difference until about 285. Now I'm about 260 and had to buy new clothes!

I was 256 to start and 5'7.5" tall. It took 40 lbs before I saw a difference in the mirror. Pictures showed it earlier and measuring did too. There are so many who have hit goal and still don't see it.

It's a process. Keep doing your daily best for your ability and you'll get there!

Hi, I felt the same way but as others have said above, your body needs time to heal. You will have a lot of internal swelling.. These things take time and it takes time for your body to heal.. I think I was 8 weeks out when I had that moment of "wow, I finally feel like I'm losing wt" and "these clothes are big on me".. So yea, it took time for me to get to the point where my body had healed and the swelling had finally gone away and things started falling into place where I felt like I was losing when I would try on my clothes. You will get there :)

You will. It seemed to take me forever to feel a difference or go down a clothing size and then I went down two at once! Just be patient.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
