Hypoglycemia and Protein Deficiency

Recommended Posts

I haven't been on here in a while. had my surgery a little over 10 months ago and have lost about 84lbs. Overall, I've had a pretty great experience. Luckily, I've never suffered from issues like diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol. My surgery and recovery went pretty smooth and I have been continuing to lose weight slowly but surely. My weight loss pretty much comes to a halt when I am not eating enough. However, I have developed a problem with drops in my blood sugar as well as Protein deficiency. My main concern is the hypoglycemia. I still have a very hard time staying on track with scheduled meals and Snacks. Sometimes I do forget to eat or I just cannot stomach the foods I need to eat. My doctor told me that if I don't maintain my blood sugar eventually I will just pass out. The last few weeks have been especially difficult and I have been experiencing a lot of issues. Today, I finally realized that I am not eating as often or as much as I should and after taking my vitals and eventually narrowing it down to my glucose levels I took my glucose tablets I felt a lot better.

So my questions are:

Has anyone else dealt with hypoglycemia or protein deficiency?

What did you do to remedy the issue?

How do you stay on schedule with meals and snacks?

What do you eat when you feel like you can't eat anything but you know you have to eat?

Any other suggestions are welcome too. Everyone is so great on this site I really appreciate all of your input and help.

Thanks!

My go to Protein kick that tastes great is a strawberry gladiator smoothie from smoothie King. I buy a medium and have them split it into 2 small (bigger than the average small) cups. There is 45 grams of Protein in the smoothie so when you split it between two you are getting the proper amount of protein for one serving. The best part - it tastes awesome and there is only a couple grams of carbs!! If I had the money I would be drinking these on a daily basis. Oh, and you can freeze the second half and have it the next day :-)

I have a Protein deficiency for reason not related to wls so I know how hard it is to play catch up. My go to is the whey Protein Shots. 45 grams of protein per shot and only 180 calories. I drink half in the morning and half at night.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
