Taking NSAID's for back pain

Recommended Posts

I am one month post op and i have always suffered from lower back pain due to some herniation on the spine. Now that i have the sleeve can anyone chime in on taking anti flamatory meds for the pain. I am having discomfort again and was prescribed naproxen 500 mg to take as needed for pain but i am worried that it may cause some issues in the stomach. Tylenol truly does not do anything for me. Please help.

I have the same issue. I was sleeved may 12 and I have 2 herniated disc to my lower back. I take meloxicam. My doc said its ok to use it in moderation.

My dr said the same. In moderation and not high doses. I take them about 4 days a month if I must. Does the dr know to avoid them? I had to remind my general that I couldn't have them after surgery. Speedy healing!

@@gomezk2 In my opinion, it is too soon after your surgery for you to take nsaids, if ever at all.

You should definitely check with your surgery team about that.

Hmmmm. I was told I couldn't take NSAIDs for the rest of my life and that if I had chronic or arthritic pain, it was a reason to really contemplate NOT having sleeve surgery! I was told Tylenol is the only option. They made me sign a paper specifically agreeing to this restriction!

My surgeon allows NSAIDS, but not at 4 weeks. I was cleared at 6 weeks, which is when tissues are healed. I've taken ibuprofen every day since.

I had plastics 7weeks ago and was offered NASIDs and when I asked the doctor she said they were fine as long as I wasn't tKing them long term. I did use them the first I would say 10 days without issues

NASIDs cause stomach ulcers. Did your doc finding any of these while he was in there? Mine did. I had been on Celebrex every day for years before I stopped a couple of months before the surgery. Now I take one when ever my pain gets too bad but certainly not daily. Pepcid daily and revisit the ulcer in a couple of months.

I asked my surgeon about this last week. He said I could take Ibuprofen if I took an antacid before as stomach acid increases ulcer risk. I don't know the science of his statement but it might be worth looking into.

I had a bad headache 3 days out and my surgeon said it was fine to take Excedrin as long as I cut the pill in half. With sleeve you can still eventually take those meds just not right away. With bypass you are told not to

Prior to surgery I had chronic headaches and occassional Migraines so this was definitely a topic of conversation with my surgeon. My NSAID of choice is Aleve (naproxen) and he was fine with it as long as it was occassional use only. I don't get headaches nearly as often since the surgery (and no migraines) but I am taking the Aleve for back pain now. Usually take 2 tylenol and if that doesn't do the job, 1-2 Aleve, but I manage to take the Aleve only once or twice a week usually.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
