I'll be having having Gastric Bypass surgery in July! Yay! I was wondering what exactly will I need to buy far as supplies and food is concerned? What types of broth or Soups do you all recommend? What types of Protein Shakes? Can you give me an idea of what the main things I would need would buy? And of course a list of things you may think I may want or could use? Also what exactly do you recommend I take to the hospital. I was told the hospital stay is generally 2-4 days without complications, but since I live so far away my surgeon suggested I stay in town a few extra days. I appreciate any advice and thank you all in advance.

Hi Beauty+5! How exciting- you'll be starting your new journey soon. For broth, try getting low sodium. I bought some small bowls (holds about 1/2 cup) and small plates, as well as baby spoons. Helps you get used to smaller servings. Inspire Protein Powder is great. I love the Peanut Butter cup flavor! sugar free popsicles were my favorite thing for the first few weeks. Hope this helps ????best of luck to you ????

Chapstick for your hospital stay. Your lips will get very dry due to meds.

I haven't had surgery yet but have spent a ton of time in the hospital thanks to my kids.

Bring your own pillow

I also bring a snugly blanket that smells like home

Flip flops for the shower

Chargers, I have special ones with long, long cords. The outlets the the hospital and hotels are never in good locations.

For home--heating pad helped with soreness, I was on pureed from the hospital so my list-- SF popsicles, FairLife milk (has 12 g protein) cottage cheese, broths, SF Jello, canned tuna, canned chicken, Water, cream of wheat and unsweetened oatmeal, baby food vegs--carrots, applesauce,etc... Premier Protein powder( only started that after regular bowel movements)

For Hosp- chapstick, pair of skid resistant socks and crocs, pillow for the car ride home to support abdomen, chargers and IPAD, soft cloth headband and clip helped, loose clothes for trip home, toothbrush/paste, hairbrush. That was all I took. Didn't even look at phone or IPAD!

Pure Protein (individuals) sold at Costo are great for grab'n'go. Otherwise I normally drink the Gold Standard whey (Optimum Nutrition). Whatever Protein you go for, make sure it has the essential amino acids. I also had 3 bags of the Bariatric Advantage Protein Powder (orange cream, vanilla, and chocolate) and was surprised how good it tasted.

I drank a lot of chicken broth, got sick of popsicles VERY quickly.

I also would look into buying a food scale for home. The one I have (forget the name) even has codes you can punch in for things like types of chicken, vegetables, etc. and it will give you the nutritional information.

I found these little measuring cups at Walmart that hold only 2 ounces and they are awesome. They show measurements by ounce, tablespoon, mL, and cup (which is 1/4). I also bought little bowls but don't use them because they are too big. I eat my puréed food out of my measuring cup, it's easier. Also take a baby spoon to the hospital for Jello and broth if you're nervous about consuming too much at a time.

I have stocked up on Protein stuff for right after surgery. I have 5 flavors of Isopure zero carb/sugar protein powder and Isopure ready to drink Protein Drinks. I also am going to get Unjury protein chicken broth (it's medical grade- either a hospital supply store or your surgeon's office should have it).

I also got one of the ninja bullet blenders for when I want to make protein shakes- and for when I'm on the purred food stage.

Have a supply of Vitamins ready at home...liquid and chewable. This way when it's time to start taking them your not out running around trying to find them.

Literally the only things I needed in the hospital were my phone and Chapstick! I used a pillow for the ride home too.

Gas pains were the worst. Roght under my breadt bone and felt like chest pressure. Lasted for a little over a day. I took my phone and kindle, ipod, pillow, bathrobe. Didnt use all of my toys. I had a back scratcher too. I used that more than anything

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
