Diabetic Bandsters?

Recommended Posts

How about an area where those of us living with diabetes and the band can share thoughts and tips. For example now that I am banded and filled, I am finding I am haveing many low blood sugars and would love to hear how others are handling that.

Thanks for your consideration

I would love to talk about what we deal with. I asked Alex to put this site up. He was not going to do it at first. Said he did not think enough people would use it. Let's show him we need it and that there are alot of us out here. I am type II, and still taking insulin. I hope to get off it. How about you?

Ok I was a type 2 diabetic however now I am not thanks to my lap band. Maybe I am the odd ball sort to speak. I no longer needed my meds 3 weeks after my surgery back last September. I still test and have to the rest of my life but that is ok with me. I don't know about the carb thing all i know is that my surgeon told me either no carbs or very little carbs and that is what I have been doing. However I exercise and walk like a dog sort to speak and we all know that walking can bring your A1C level back into normal range also I was told with my type 2 diabetes if I lost weight I would lose the diabetes all in good time. I don't drink soda and I stay away from the sweet Snacks well just about all snacking in exchange for fruits and such. If your a type 2 diabetic why are you taking insulin? I never took insulin and for those that are type 1 and taking insulin it is or can be very hard to beat no doubt about it. I ask a lot of questions and read a lot just to educate myself. What meds are you taking and how much do you take each day? Some meds keep your blood sugars high for some reason. My husband is a type 2 diabetic and none of his meds work and he refuses to take insulin, but then he will not follow the correct diet either and misses his meds all the time. i used to remind him and help him but he is 57 years old and he knows what he needs to do so in place of making me crazy I just let him do what he wants, he knows all the risks. Check with your Dr. and ask why your diabetes is the way it is, sometimes your thyroid controls things too., I wish you luck my new friend.

I am on insulin because all the oral medications was not lowering my blood sugars enough. I have been on insulin for about 3 years and it was not working either. Tell your husband I really understand what he is going through. For some of us if you sugars are out of control your body craves food. It is a vicious cycle.

Hi SueSue, how have you been handling the sugar cravings? I am worried about not being able to control my sugar addiction and not be able to lose weight after lap band. I have been diabetic for 13 years, since I was 27 years old. I need to have this surgery so I can extend my life by being healthier. I too take insulin along with meds by mouth.

Greetings, I'm getting banded on April-23rd & I also have type 2 diabetes. My nurse at my consultation said to watch my blood sugar very close after surgery because it drops considerably & I could become hypoglycemic.

I was excited to find this thread. I have not had surgery yet but am concerned about the not eating part when you first have surgery. I am a dishrag when my sugar gets too low. I know the doctors know how to handle this but it would be reassuring to here from other diabetics first hand. BTW I am on insulin and januvia.

I am so happy to see this thread. I am type 2 diabetic, no insulin, just glyburide. I am hoping to get off of it ASAP after banding. My sugars have been really wacky on the 10 day liquid pre op, they go between 70 & 250 for some reason. Cant seem to get them regulated. Hopefully surgery will help! Just 6 more days!

I was taking 1600 mg a day of Glucophage for my diabetics 2. I have gone from a high weight of 317 to my present weight of 213. I no longer take Glucophage or use a cpap machine.

My fasting blood sugars average 100.

I have type II diabetes but my primary thought prior to surgery he wouldn't renew my script for metformin because he assumed I wouldn't need it any longer. Unfortunately I've gained back the weight I lost prior to surgery and haven't lost on the band yet so maybe it has something to do with my diabetes but I'm not sure. Trying to find a new endocrinologist next week, brandyII.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
