Is it normal not to go for a #2 for a few days?

Recommended Posts

I'm 12 days out from surgery, after the 4th day i started going daily but the last time i went was Thursday, is this normal? i have no cramps or pains, dont even feel like going. Got an appointment with my Surgeon on Tuesday so will ask him then if still not been.

Sorry for the crappy subject......

See what i did there.....

I think in the beginning there wasn't a whole lot to really "go" as it was all liquids that I was taking in. There was nothing "solid" really coming out (sorry if that's tmi). But as the months have progressed (I'm 21 months post op now), sticking to the diet has proven challenging to get enough Fiber in. I either have to take a Fiber supplement or take Miralax or MOM a couple of times a week to keep things regular. Otherwise, it would be a problem.

Yes, also when you take in so little food, it takes longer for your colon to fill

It was 9 days before I went.

I would agree with all! I have been lucky to be going about once every 3 days without MOM but I have it for backup! My doctors office wanted me to have it and take if I don't go in 3 days!

Ugh! An ongoing issue for me. I never go any earlier than 3 days. Even then, I often need "encouragement." This is the third day on Miralax, and now 4 days out from last #2. Once you have one, do not wait too long. On the second or third day, reach for help from Constipation meds. Impaction is TERRIBLY painful.

I have found that all I have to do is eat cottage cheese. An hour later I go. I hope I am not getting lactose intolerant.

I had same deal. After surgery and anesthesia, you will shutdown completely for a few days. When you get home you will be completely full of gas in every way, intestinal tract, chest cavity, stomach. It will hurt like a childhood tummy ache combined with the day after soreness of the day after doing 1000 sit ups. Get up and walk in the hospital. Every couple hours if you can. It starts things moving. Get off pain meds as soon as you are comfortable doing so. Keep taking Tylenol and make sure you are comfortable enough to move around. I was sure that I would never have a bowel movement again but a couple days later, after some Protein Shakes, things got better. There is nothing meaningful while on liquid diet, but I'm not cramped. Use gasx the first few days. I got a lot better pretty quickly. Vacuumed house yesterday. Walking a lot. Getting better. Hang in there.

I am on day 2 of my pre-op liquid diet and this morning my #2 was almost black. Very dark brown. Why?? I hate to be gross but I thought I could get some feedback before my crazy kicked in and I stalked my dr. Do you think it's because I drank two dark chocolate Protein Shakes?

Black tarry stools indicate old blood. I would call the surgeons office and make them aware. Also if you are taking Iron it will make your stool dark.
