Two days postoperative- when does intestinal track restart?

Recommended Posts

I'm two days postoperative and nothing is moving. To boot I gained 9 lbs in hospital without eating for three days. Is this just fluids. When does all this gas start to move out? Yes I am walking a lot.

Hi, i'm 3 days post op and was only in the hospital overnight. As soon as i got home i took a laxative every day i was on narcotic pain meds as recommended by my surgeon. This helped moved my intestinal tract along. I am already off the narcotics and only taking liquid tylenol and advil as needed for pain (also recommended by my surgeon). If you haven't tried a laxative yet i recommend that you do.

Good Luck,

Tracy

My first bowel movement was 9 days post op and 2 stool softeners later. I didn't take a laxative although tempting, due to Dr. not recommending.

Boy, doctors are so different! Mine had me on two stool softeners a day. Pain meds and anethestic slowed me down for a while. After I started soft foods I was constipated one time.....and it will never happen again. It was like passing a watermelon through a straw.

I bought a lot of Smooth Move Tea in all four flavors. It works, but they all taste like licorice to me. Now I just take Miralax in a morning beverage and all is right with the world the next morning.

I have had quite loose bowel movements since I've been home (surgery June 8). Not sure if it's the protien powder or what but seem to be one of tr rare cases where I'm not constipated!

Good luck

Thanks for replies. I'm a hurting puppy right now. I'm a recovering alcoholic so I am not taking any narcotics. The tummy hurts pretty bad but I have passed a bit of gas. pills and fluids are tough going down. Shoulders still hurt bad. Walking helps. Starting shake for real this morning. Bottoms up. I am so lucky to have a devoted wife waiting on me hand and foot. She is managing all these food and pill requirements for the moment.

@@Miss Mac - I bought some of the Smooth Move tea for just this scenario. I haven't tried it yet. I'm severely disappointed to know that it (possibly) tastes like licorice. I don't suppose it tastes like red licorice instead of that foul black licorice? I'm sure I already know the answer.

To me it tastes like black licorice - that thing whuch I hate. I have the chocolate flavor on hand now and put it in sugar free hot cocoa with extra vanilla and sweetener. Not as bad but I can still taste it.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
