trying to figure things out

Recommended Posts

I'm new to this. I started this journey in February of this year. I have attended all of the required nutrition appointments as well as the other required tests my doctor ordered. My last appointment before submission to the insurance company for approval is July 2nd. I am having a difficult time deciding between the sleeve and Roux en Y. I have a BMI of 43 and high blood pressure, sleep apnea, GERD/ Acid reflux, as well as osteoarthritis and knee/joint pain. I have friends that are constantly telling me I am just too lazy and am looking for the easy way out as well as others saying because I weigh 258, I not "big" enough for surgery. I've heard that this is the best site for non-conditional support. Hopefully I can get help with choosing the best surgery for me as well as finding the best Protein and Vitamin supplements.< /p>

GERD alone should tell you that your best option is RNY. It is the only surgery that will cure it, I fact the sleeve often times makes GERD worse. If you read the post you will also see many sleeve patients have to go through everything again because they have to go from a sleeve to a RNY. My belief is Imwas doing this once and only once, so I went with the procedure that has been around the longest, has 40+ years research and has been shown to be very successful. Whatever you decide I wish you the best of luck. Two weeks out and I am down 25 pounds.

Thanks. I was set on the RNY until a few friends started talking about all the negative possibilities that could happen. I'm guilty of letting them get in my head

I originally wanted the sleeve but my surgeon won't do it on anyone with GERD. I am 3.5 post op RNY and doing great.

I ended up with RNY for the very same reasons as listed above. RNY will cure it while the sleeve and lap and can make it much worse requiring a revision to bypass anyway.

Good luck!

Raises hand - I am a sleeve to bypass revision. Going through the whole process again. I have gerd and my sleeve is twisted... I never had Gerd until post sleeve. Wishing you the best.

My surgeon wants me to do the RNY because of the gerd. I still have my gallbladder too and he said he is going to take it out during surgery. I've had gerd for many years. The thought of never having it again is crazy awesome. My surgeon also said he wants to do an egd before surgery too. Is that normal? As far as sleeve vs. Bypass, I would definitely go with something that has been around longer and has more success stories. I've only heard of a few unsuccessful bypass surgeries. Granted they were pretty bad. Don't be afraid to ask your surgeon about bad experiences of others. My surgeon said to do all the research I can and to ask all the questions I want.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
