August 2003 bandsters...

Recommended Posts

Hey Alex, sounds like we are sitting on the same boat. I can eat a house, but I feel totally normal. One thing I didn't mention, in the morning, I can eat very little. Then during lunch it's a little better, but by night time, I feel absolutely nothing.

I don't feel like I am doing great though, cause I have not been following my prescribed diet at all. I am having sugar which I shouldn't. I am staying away from soda, but Arizona tea is yummy. Rice goes down fine, bread is okay, salad no problem. I know I am going to have less later, but I really want to loose already. Everyone who knows I was having WLS is looking at me asking me what I am doing wrong. I mean geez, give me a break, it works later, not now.

Hey, I was banded on August 5th, so I 'qualify' for this post :P

I lost 17lb the first 3 weeks, but since then have come to a grinding halt! I had my first fill on 9/11, and I am going to have my 2nd fill next week on 10/7. I am a little discouraged, but not overly, as I know this is for life and that I don't have to lose it all NOW. Some would be a little help though :o

Glad everybody is doing well. At the beginning of my sixth week, I am down 20 pounds. Got my first fill yesterday (1cc) and now I can't eat much at all and that's the idea!

It is so nice to hear that everyone else is having the same issues as I am. I'm referring to feeling little or no restriction. I know that "this is not the losing stage, but the healing stage" but it is getting really discouraging to not feel that restriction. And everyone that I see that knows I've had the surgery says "how much have you lost now?" and I say "22 pounds" and their response is ALWAYS "that's what you were at 2 weeks ago, you haven't lost anything in 2 whole weeks?"!!! Then I find myself getting more and more discouraged. I think it is just the fear of losing the weight loss battle AGAIN!!! But when I get on here and read these posts, it makes me feel so much better. I don't feel like I'm the only one who's waiting on pins and needles for some restriction! My first fill is scheduled for 10/14 and I'm going to beg for him to be aggressive...lol. Thanks everyone for your posts. I'm so glad I found this site.

Well, the restriction that I felt from my Thursday fill isn't as tight as I thought at first. I can't eat as much as I could pre-fill, but I can eat more than I should be able to. Oh, well. I'm going to stick with this for a few weeks and see how it goes. I think I'll still lose weight because I'm into a pretty good groove with my diet.

It's so interesting (and helpful) to see that others are experiencing many of the same things. I am 5 1/2 weeks post-op and had my fill yesterday. I have been doing very well and losing weight, but am very hungry. Since the fill (only 24 hours ago), I have been on liquids (for 2 days) and then 2 days of mush. I am really hungry! I will wait to judge how the fill has worked, once I get onto solid food. But right now, I'm really struggling because I'm "starving".

Keep on posting!

Mary

Reporting in for dh, Wayne, banded 8/2/03.

He is about where you all seem to be. He did get a fill on 9/12, 2cc, but it hasn't done anything for him, we are going back on 10/9 for a re-adjustment (8 hr drive so we have to plan).

He continues to loose weight though, maybe only 1 lb a week, but he's lost a total of 35 lbs so far.

He hates the starving too, duh!

Hi everyone!

Tomorrow is my b-day, and when I was scheduling my appointment for sometime this week, instead of thinking the old way ("but I'll want to go out to lunch...and dinner...and have cake..."), I decided to schedule my fill for the lunch hour! Figured that was the best gift I could give myself.

I'm hopeful for some restriction, but realistic enough to know it may take a few more.

Hang in there, my fellow August bandsters!

Well, since a lot of us are struggling with not having hit the "sweet spot" and having people harrass us about how much weight we have or haven't lost, I thought I'd switch the subject just a tad to "NSVs" or "Non-scale victories." I've been on the Weight Watchers boards for a couple of years now (with no success until post-band) and this is something they talk about a lot. Because often there are positive changes even when the scale does not move. So what are some of your NSVs?

Mine are:

My clothes fit better.

I have much more energy.

I'm exercising more.

Climbing stairs isn't quite as hard as it was before.

My outlook is more positive because I know this will work for me.

I hear you on the 'how much weight have you lost now?' People ask me that all the time, and continually look at me if we are eating together, asking me 'are you getting full yet?' I only lost 17lb initially, and have not dropped anything for 7 weeks. I keep gaining and losing the same 2lb! People keep telling me I look smaller though, and when I measure myself I really am losing inches. I wonder how that happens?! You weigh the same, yet your body shape is changing? I guess I also have similar NSV's - clothes fitting better, my calves are not 'bursting' if I bend down, and a little more confidence in my step. I get my 2nd fill tomorrow, and I am so looking forward to real restriction to kick start my weight loss. :o

NSVs, what a great thing! I love the idea of recognizing our progress even if the scale refuses to cooperate.

So far I've had a couple. There are the jeans that I couldn't wear since before my first pregnancy (same size, but a very different cut that just would *not* go on). Then there's the fact that I can walk up and down the very steep main street of our town without huffing.

And yesterday, at the playground, I got on a swing and SWUNG without my hips being bruised, and without fear that the swing would fly off. It's only 18-20 lbs., but somehow it's making a huge difference to me. Yahoooooooo!!!

here are some of my non scale victories...

my bmi is down from 51.7 at 350

to drumroll please...45.5 at 308 HOLY COW!!

i was in a 28/30

now i can wear a 24 pretty comfortably and EVEN sqeezed into a 22 skirt!!!!!!!!!(I couldnt have worn it out but by god the buttons all closed LOL!!)

i went to the movies this weekend and when i saw the seats my heart was pounding...no fun squeezing in the seats and pretending to be comfy...but no squeeze i fit!!

this is a big one... not eating the most. when i used to eat around other people i always noticed i ate the most...saturday night i made veggie pizza for some friends i only ate 2 pieces...to there 6, 4,and 3 pieces...

i do feel so much better! i am so close to being under 300!!! i will

be so happy because then i will only be 100 away from under 200!!!!

I LOVE MY BAND!!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
