Nicked Bowels - Encouragement needed...

Recommended Posts

I feel so bad....one of my best friends who I encouraged and supported to have the sleeve went 3 days ago.....she was in so much pain afterwards and finally, they went in only to find, her small intestines had been nicked during surgery.

From what I understand, they cleaned it ALL out, fixed the nicks and she's now on antibiotics. She's feeling a little better, but definitely still in pain.

Please someone encourage me so I can encourage her!!! I don't want to hear any horror stories, only positive outcomes with the same scenarios.

Please, I feel terrible right now!!!

It is up to you to encourage your friend to have a positive attitude while she heals. Because of this setback it will take her longer to get on her feet. If she feels pain then she feels pain.

I am so glad it was not worse. It does happen! She is a lucky girl that they found it, corrected it and she is on her way.

Does not matter that you encouraged her to do this. The final decision was hers. Just be there for her and encourage her to keep going forward one step at a time. One moment at a time and all will be great!

Many have had complications and are stronger for it and really appreciate in a entirely different way the surgery of the sleeve. :)

It sounds like everything will work out in the end. It is terrible to have a complication and I am sure that right now she is pretty miserable about it. But in a couple of months she'll be recovered from the surgery and the complication and enjoying the benefits of her WLS. So maybe try to encourage her to focus on the long term, big picture stuff?

It is always possible in any "key hole" surgery to knick things when inserting trocars. They don't do it on purpose. They just are putting them in somewhat blindly. Please don't feel bad, there was nothing you or her could do. If they're trying to fix the problem, that's what you can ask for. Keep focusing on the outcome 6 months or a year down the road. :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
