Amylou 206 Posted June 11, 2015 The hospital I'm having my RNY at requires all patients to attend a class within 30 days of surgery. I attended this morning and it scared the crap out of me!!! I was feeling pretty good until I sat thru detailed descriptions the OR, every wire and monitor that will be attached to me, etc. I'm so overwhelmed!!! Somebody tell me that a month from now this will all seem insignificant!!
Alyssa0102 24 Posted June 11, 2015 Maybe not a month from now, but it will pass! It was the best decision of my life. It's rough at first, but I think they tend to try to "scare" you. It is a BIG adjustment. It's a life change! You will do great!
checkmeowt 27 Posted June 11, 2015 We also have to attend a class - mine is on the 25th. It will be worth it - and remember, they do this a thousand times a year. I'm always a fan of more information than less.
grandmaofone 411 Posted June 12, 2015 They ALWAYS give you worst case, just in case it happens. I have heard all but good stories by lurking on this page. You will do fine and this will soon be a distant memory!!! Good Luck!!!
sparksrn 65 Posted June 16, 2015 You'll be glad you did it, maybe not in a month, but eventually.
guckynums 5 Posted June 17, 2015 Hi Amylou, I just had my bypass surgery yesterday morning! I was discharged earlier today and am now home resting. I think they do purposely try to "scare" you to make sure you really want it. I was really nervous and scared before surgery too, but I walked in and laid on the operating table, they put a mask over my face and made some adjustments to my position and the next thing I knew I was waking up to my mom and my fiancée in my recovery room! Also, my doctor allowed me anti anxiety medication before surgery which also helped to soothe me before I went into the OR. You will be fine!
onesleevedmamma 178 Posted June 17, 2015 TOTALLY WORTH IT!!
MSWMike 22 Posted June 18, 2015 I got scheduled for my pre-op class for next month. I look forward to hearing what they have to say, but I'm scared at the same time....I know there's risk involved in any surgery. If there's anything that I can do to make the surgery go better, I'll do it. For now it seems my doctor wants me to try and lose as much weight before the surgery and do a 2 week liquid diet to lose more weight and shrink my liver. If that's what I need to do, it's what I'll do!
onesleevedmamma 178 Posted June 18, 2015 (edited) MSWmike. Loosing the weight will shrink your liver which sits in the way of them removing your stomach so it is pretty important and seems to make recovery easier. I would also suggest starting to make habit changes like trying to not drink 15 min. Before or after meals (and during of course), eliminate carbonated drinks, start Vitamin routine if you haven't. .. this will make the transition to what you will need to do after (not by choice but your body will have to) much easier. Also maybe try adding a walk everyday to build the habit. It will help with the weight loss too Good luck! You'll do great!!
