EnglishDan 143 Posted June 11, 2015 Since i had my sleeve done on June 2nd i have not had one bit of heartburn or acid at all. Before surgery i was having episodes everyday quite sever that felt like heart attacks with pains in the left arm and so on. i dunno maybe its just because its so soon but ive ate all kinds of spicy GERD triggering Soups and have been fine. I was told it would likely get worse but its gone for now at least
Babbs 14,681 Posted June 11, 2015 Well, you're one of the lucky ones. Usually the sleeve makes it worse. It did in my case. I actually was on full liquids for 6 weeks after surgery because of it. I'm still taking a PPI, but at almost 10 months out, it seems to be improving. I sure hope so, especially after the new study that just came out about PPI's. I really would like to stop taking them someday....
JamieLogical 8,710 Posted June 11, 2015 I have heard of people for whom GERD gets better post-sleeve, but it definitely seems to be the more rare outcome. Typically speaking, GERD is worse in VSG patients post-op for at least the first few months to a year. Some people continue to have issues with it beyond that point. I, like Babbs, had my GERD get significantly worse post-op, so I've had to be on 40mg of omeprazole daily. I'm a little over nine months post-op.
