Recommended Posts

I have read a few people could eat Chili post op. I am still in my full liquid stage. How do people tolorate it and do you blend it in the blender?

My doc said that spicy food might not do well.. any one have a problem with it?

Thanks Michelle, I was going to wait until I was on mushy foods and about my 2nd or 3rd week. Just wanting something with substance.

I know it has a ton of protien in it.

Hi Mom!

It wasnt until week 7 that I could eat something like chili, it has a tendency to be VERY gassy on our new formed tummy's. So be patient, you will start on regular foods soon enough!

FYI: this is one food that I MUST eat slow - it clog's the stoma easily. And one more bit of info about chili that I JUST found out; to add MORE protien to it, order a small meat patty along with the chili (Wendy's sell's just the patty's for .60 cents) then break it up and stir it into the chili. It helps fill you up AND you get more protien!!!

If you make your own, use ground turkey. After browning it, rinse it well (in a colander) to remove excess grease. Plus you can control the spicyiness.

Thanks, I was so bad today. I went to my mother's house late this afternoon and guess what she had made for lunch,..... Chili.. I took two spoonfulls added Water and blended it smooth and ate it. I was full for hours, which was nice as I have not felt full very often. Although, I was a bad girl as I should not of have eaten it. Tomorrow is a new day and I just HAVE to do the Protein Shakes and see if those will fill me up.

The scary thing was that this did not bother my tummy. I have tried a few different things ( not as bad as this) and no difference in feeling.

I hope it is normal. May God be with me over the next few weeks. I just want to make sure that I stick with the program and can have self control on what I CANNOT eat right now. Just a few more days until I get to soft foods.

Just remember, this liquids/soft foods period is not so much about how you tolerate what it is that you eat. It is about keeping your freshly operated on tummy as still as possible in order to allow the scar tissue to develop that 'anchors' it in. If the tummy is having to work, such as grinding and churning to digest more solid foods, then it is not being allowed to get 'seated' into the scar tissue which it needs in order to help prevent slippage later down the road.

Jessie Ahroni has a thing she says, ' just because you CAN, doesn't mean you should.' We can apply this in many ways with banding.

I doubt the chili was a big error, especially if you blended it. I just wanted to remind you of what the liquids phase is really about. It's more of a technical issue than a food tolerance issue at this point. It'll be no time at all before your back to everyday foods, I promise. Then, you'll be coming back here and saying you don't understand why you're not losing anymore and wondering if we've ever heard of such a thing. lol. Go slow, you have the rest of your life!!

Thanks leatha_G, I know all of the above, I guess sometimes you just need to be reminded. I have been great today, Water and chicken noodle Soup (broth only). I am going to make a Protein Drink soon as I had to have a talk with myself this morning about not getting in enough Water or Protein in the last few days.

Thanks again. I know the weight lose is going to really really really slow down, so I am taking advantage of it right now. :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
