Hi all,

I am new to the group and anxious to get started. I am very excited about future surgery. I have just started the process. I am diabetic so I am very interested to know if there are other Bansters who either were or are diabetic and if it has helped their health. I am not sure who my surgeon will be as I am getting a another opinion. The first doctor wants me to have a bypass instead. He has not yet done a Lap Band surgery but is a Vascular surgeon who has done many bypsses. I don't really want the invasiveness of bypass surgery. Please give me opinions and advice.:omg:

Hi, Mimey,

Are you in the USA?? If so, here is a website for finding bariatric surgeons: American Society for Bariatric Surgery

I would definitely get another opinion & find another surgeon.

You replied to my message the other day and left no address for me. Thanks for the suggestion and I have done just what you said. I am going to another indoctrination class with more experienced surgeons tomorrow. I also went to the web site you suggested and it has helped tremendously. You are a jewell . Mimey

Glad I could help, Mimey.

FYI.... one way to email or send a private message to someone on this site is to click on the underlined screen name on their post. If they've entered an email address, that's where you'll be able to make a contact.

My dad had surgery 3 years ago. He's been a diabetic for almost 20 years now. All I can say is that the lap band has added years to his life without a doubt. His weight (and genetics) caused the diabetes, which caused high blood pressure which caused him to have kidney failure. After a very successful kidney transplant, a doctor told him "you're kidney will likely not give you problems again in this lifetime, however if you don't want to be a vegetable sitting in a wheelchair when your grandkids get older, you gotta do something about your weight". That obviously gave him a real kick in the pants. Long story short, he lost ALL of his excess weight with the band, and has kept it off for 3 years!! He injects about 1/4 of the insulin a day that he used to. If you're a diabetic, don't even think twice. Like I said, it'll add years! I'm only 25 and to prevent the horrible disease, I got myself banded 2 months ago.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
