Help I need convinced that I should exercise

I have searched the threads and what I have found people mentioning is that when you start to exercise the weight loss will slow down do to the fact that they are building muscle. My problem is that at this point I want to lose the weight more than I want to gain the muscle. I have to see the scale moving in the right direction. So what Im considering is not exerciseing until I have gotten to onederland, atleast 199.9. I dont want to start exerciseing now and risk losing the weight. I understand that I would be buiding muscle and losing inches, but if the scale stops moving Im going to get really discouraged. Is this a good or bad ideal? :help:

START NOW!!! You will feel great and have tons of extra energy and you are NOT going to gain pounds of muscle in a few weeks. It takes time to build enough muscle to GAIN weight from it. I started walking an hour or so out of surgery and have not stopped yet. I keep doing more and more and LOVE every minute of it!!!! Although I have gone on to better and bigger things than walking( because I find it boring now), getting ready to get out the roller blades that I have from SEVERAL years ago and get going on them again!!! I am sooooooooo for exercise. I can't tell you enough how much it has helped me in EVERY aspect of my life. I do not have a fill as of yet and I KNOW all the exercise has helped me with my weight loss. Good luck and GET MOVING!! Deanna

I was working out prior to surgery 5Xweek.....and a week after surgery I just finished 5Xthis week! I feel better......12 lbs off! Easier to work out with less weight! Burns calories! More muscle burns more calories! What is not good about exercising!?!

I don't want to build a lot of muscle.....just firm as I go along! Plus less flabby when I do get down to goal!

You'll feel better! Look better! Be healthier!!!!

We NEED to exercise.

Exercise should be part of the lifestyle change we adopt when we are banded.

If you were to start exercising now, it is unlikely that you will gain enough muscle to outweigh the weight you lose.

It takes a lot more than you think to gain that sort of muscle. It takes lifting weights in the gym daily, heavy weights, and lots of reps. We are talking body builder type activity.

And remember, as we lose weight, we do not just lose fat. We lose muscle too. So resistance work should be part of our exercise routine, like it or not. Or we will end up flabby.

And again. We are very unlikely to build the type of muscle that it takes to gain "muscle weight" with just 2 or 3 days a week of resistance training.

I agree, its a myth that you build muscle to the tune of it actually affecting your weight loss. What really happens is that the microdamage you cause your muscles in exercising causes a bit of Water retention. It wont last, and your fat loss will easily outstrip your muscle gain, which even if its truly excellent will only be a couple of pounds. But it makes a huge difference to your body and your metabolism.

And lots and lots of cardio as well will literally have weight falling off you. That effect seems to peter out over time, but cardio is a very valuable tool in maintaining weight loss.

I agree with the others. There is no way I would have lost 80+lbs in 7 months if I wasn't exercising 4-5 times a week for 45 minutes to an hour (thats just cardio). I also do weights about 2 times a week as well. Start now, you won't regret it.

I agree she smiles. I KNOW I would not have lost this amount of weight in two months without the exercise. I do cardio every day, 45 minutes plus. I do strength training every other day. YOU have to move to lose. I know that others have lost with out exercise but I always look at the little bit of food they are eating. I didn't get banded to DIET, I got banded to get healthy. I still want to eat, just good foods. I do not want to live on shakes for two meals a day and have one meal of food. I see this A LOT on the board. People are willing to "drink" their meals, I am NOT willing to do this. Good luck and get moving!!!! You won't regret it AT ALL!! Deanna

I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment. I dont think enjoying good food and wanting to eat and weight loss are mutually exclusive, and I didnt get banded to starve or be miserable either. I like to eat dammit. I just dont want to do it to excess anymore. And you can do that and still lose weight if you exercise.

You are getting very accurate advice ecercise excercise excercise. It will raise your BMR (basal metobolic rate) meaning your metabolism will be burning more calories at rest even while you sleep!

Thanks everyone for the info. That exactly want I needed to hear. I wanted to hear that the exercise wouldnt cause my weight loss to stall. Im going to contact a fitness center to get in and speak with a trainer that can help me get started.

I had lost 30 pounds in three months without exercising and then I just kind of stalled out. I now jazzercise 2 - 3 times a week and do yoga 2 times a week and 7 pounds have just fallen off since then.

Plus, as the others have said, I have way more energy and just feel so proud of myself leaving the studio all sweat-soaked and red-faced. I sleep much better and now even wake up 30 minutes early and walk 1 to 1 1/2 miles on my treadmill before I go to work.

Start now, you won't regret a moment of it.

I whole-heartedly agree with everyone. I would not have lost this much weight without exercise. When I had the surgery I invested in a BowFlex TreadClimber. When I get on that machine before work in the mornings it makes my day go so much better. It was first hard to drag my butt out of bed in the mornings. It has gotten easier since. I still set new goals for myself and reward myself at these goals. My new goal is to be under 200 before the end of the summer (by Sept 1). I was only doing cardio but now I am going to start some strength training.

Interesting that I ran across this thread tonite because I have lost 1/2 of my weight (50 lbs.) (yeay!) and have not exercised yet for the very same reasons. However, I believe now is the time to start and I plan to tomorrow. Anyone have good ideas for videos? Or is walking best? Will exercise help some of the flabbiness of my stomach, thighs and arms? Hope so....thanks for the advice.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
