2nd Day Pre-Op Diet-Harder Than I Thought

Recommended Posts

I think we've all had trouble with a liquid pre-op diet. It does get a bit easier after a few days. I had to do the same thing. I made it. It's not a walk in the park, the time does go by and befor you know it you are all done with it.

good luck

Inge

I will tell you, I did not have to do the liquid diet for two weeks, only 24 hours. I did have a 2 week diet, that was hard to handle, its 4oz. Protein, 4oz veggie, 4oz fruit and 2 Protein Shakes a day. I was starving, and I don't know how your doing only liquids for 2 weeks, I don't think I could do that. I say eat the popcicle, Jello, Crystal Lite, Bouillon, what ever, or leave the house, do something else.

Like some of you I am having a hard time with the post op diet. It was one month this past Saturday and I still can't get it together. I having been drinking the Protein Drinks and find myself bloated after drinking them. I am on semi solid and some days I can eat and others, things just get stuck. Mornings are not friendly and I find myself drinking coffee to reduce the hunger. Also I find myself gravitating to foods I did not normally eat, such as ice cream because it feels so soothing. Yes, as I said in the opening, I am having a hard time. I fee worse than before because if I eat my family looks at the food quantity like wow! but when I find something that goes down, I am happy and I eat and rationalize for the times I cannot eat....Oh the agony.....:decision:.

Serenity...you have come to far to give up or give in! So many people wish and pray for this surgery and cannot afford it and/or cannot get approved through their Insurance Co. You must focus and look at this as a once in a lifetime opportunity! food is just something to deprive the mind of joy, peace and happiness. It's a substitue for something we feel lacking in our lives. Anxiety also being a motivator to eat more than the norm. Don't give in, you can do this! Just take it 1 day at a time and look towards the big picture. Hang in there baby...hang in there!

I too will be on a liquid starting Monday for 2 weeks. I look forward to the challenge! I have friends who have lost 30 lbs in 1 month and they all did the 2 weeks liquid diet. They are so focused and the motivation they give is AWESOME! They have pep in there step and there are no sad faces due to the strenous diets that are now on. Imagine...every week you drop 4 - 5 lbs! Yes..give me liquids. One of my friends has lost 120 lbs..no sagging skin, and oh my goodness she looks GREAT! The only down size is ...SHE SHOPS LIKE CRAZY AND HAD TO GET A 2ND JOB TO SUPPORT HER HABIT ! Hey...I even bought her a suite..size 10..wonderful. Best of luck!

Hi,

I think for people that are having laproscopic surgery, doctors often put them on a liquid diet so that the liver will shrink (as you have not adding fat to it when you are on liquids). This will make it easier for the surgeon to get in and place the lapband. That is what I was told anyway. It seems some doctors want you to fast for 10 days, some five days, and some none. I guess it all depends on the doctor and what procedure they plan on using.

I still have a couple of weeks before surgery, so that is kinda knawing at me. I would like to just get it over with and get started with my weightloss.

Hello Im on my third day of the liquid diet and I want to know did you all eat the Protein bars because I havent read anyone say anything about the Protein Bars. I eat those and the SlimFast Optima and chicken broth Soup. I also have a popcicle or Jello here and there. Am I cheating by eating the Protein bars. HELPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!

Well consider yourself lucky that you can have some sort of food. I was on a 2 week Opti fast diet. NOTHING ELSE but Water.

You can do it, I thought I was going to cheat also, but everytime I would think about it, I put a picture of myself infront of me when I was 18 and slim.

No fear - it's only 2 weeks - then you will be so pround of your self.

I need some suggestions on how to get the Protein drinks down. The after taste makes me want to give it back. I use ice with the drinks, which helps; however are there tricks for a better tasting drink?[/quote

Have you tried the Boost Breeze? I can not stand the shakes and milky creamy Protein Drinks either so my surgeon told me that Boost Breeze is also something I can have. It is GREAT TASTING!!!! I couldn't find it anywhere but Walgreens and it comes in wild berry, peach and orange. They are just little juice boxes (like the kid juice boxes) and each one has 9 grams of Protein. It is like a juice instead of that terrible stuff. I really like it and know that when July 9th rolls around and I have to start my all liquid diet I will be able to tolerate it a lot better with these juices. Give them a try. First ask your doc if they are ok on your pre op diet. Luckily my doc recommended them to me. Good luck!!!

I would call your surgeon and ask him as all doctors are different. I can not have anything other than Clear Liquids during my 14 days of pre op. Just give your doctor a call and see what he recommends.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
