Weight Watchers Post Surgery

Recommended Posts

I am 18mths out. I still have 50lbs to get to my goal. I have not been eating as I should and honestly started off on the wrong foot after surgery. Has anyone used Weight Watchers to get to goal post surgery?

I did. I lost 90 pounds to my goal range, maintained it well for about a year then kind of started struggling to maintain a bit. I'd put on 5 and really struggle to get it off and wanted to maybe take off another 10 anyway. I found it a good way to refocus, however, their program does not lend its self to the high Protein diet we are prescribed as WLS patients. Their program favors many "zero point foods" that have very little Protein. When you're already near goal you don't get many points to begin with so I found myself allocating more than half of my daily points in protein supplements leaving little for "food". I found it easier to just do what I did early after surgery... Protein shake for Breakfast, Quest bar for lunch, another for a snack if I need it followed by a sensible dinner. Log it all in MFP and keep between 1000-1200 calories. If I do that a few days per week I can lose a little weight back to where I belong. With 50 pounds to go, you'll have more points to begin with so your experience may be different, but I found it just doesn't work well for me anymore.

My cousin had the surgery 5 years ago and started with weight watchers right after. She says the regular meetings have really kept her on track over the years. I'm thinking of doing something like that in the long run. It's a good way to keep involved with other people in the community who are trying to lose weight.

@@Capricornrose - weight watchers is an excellent program and just for socially being with people who are striding towards the same goals is plenty reason to join. The fact that you weigh in and can't fudge is why I did it. I tried the on-line thing but I need accountability and if there was a meeting closer to the house I would probably join (again). I have been doing WW of and on again for probably 20plus years.

I did WW online before surgery and it did help me stay on a program. The downside is that the point system does not help you keep track of Protein. I would recommend you still track your food with something like MyFitnessPal in order to make sure you are getting in your Protein.

If you want a community/group experience you may also want to consider OA.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
