Out patient or not

Recommended Posts

Does everyone have to stay overnight when they are sleeved? The appointment setter I talked to said that the doctor usually does it ad an out patient. But you stay all day. Is that normal?

I had my sleeve as an outpatient. Arrived at hospital at 5:30 am, surgery at 7:30 am, home at 1:30 pm. I did fine and was glad to be home. After surgery I went to recovery and when I woke I came back upstairs, walked around the halls and had to pee before being released.

You will do fine, just follow instructions! Good luck!

Thanks. Nice to hear. I heat everyone saying they had to stay at least 1 night. I would rather be home. I did fine after the band so I am hoping for the same.

I was outpatient. I was up and moving. By the next day I accidentally walked 5 miles

My surgeon discharges the self pay patients the same day, but he keeps the insurance patients overnight. I was glad to be there the night. I had more pain than with the band.

Thanks. I think I would prefer to be in the comfort of my own home. Either way I will be happy.

The hospital called mine outpatient and then explained that meant less than 24 hrs. I was kept overnight and stayed about 30 hrs. I enjoyed the IV pain meds and someone being there when I was trying to walk the halls.

I never thought about having to stay the night. I am going to ask tomorrow.

I would have been outpatient but due to my sleep apnea spend the night with 2 other patients and a nurse at the surgical center.

I stayed the night but I didn't get into my room until about 7:00 pm and was discharged by 9:30am the next day. I lucked out that my roommate had the sleeve and was there for a Tummy Tuck so we talked a lot in between our naps

I had surgery on a Monday morning and went home Wednesday afternoon. I had to be able to keep down liquids before I could go home and they don't do the swallow leak test until the following day after surgery. Water and ice the first day after surgery and then Protein shakes the second day.

I saw my doctor on Friday. He said they will keep me for 23 hours. Such an odd time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
