Incision Question-picture warning

Recommended Posts

:help:I had surgery on Tuesday, and its now Friday night. My largest incision (which is about the size of my pointer finger and is much longer than I was expecting) seems to have developed redness around it. I don't have a fever, and it isn't ozzing anything. I looked at my discharge instructions from the hosptial and they don't mention this as a reason to call the office. Did anyone else have this redness? How long did it take to go away? Do you think I should call the doctor?

You should call your doctor any time for anything. You paid good money for his services, so use them. Im not banded yet, but I was there when my sister had her hips replaced and her incisions were red. The circumference of the redness was not as large though. If this is a sign of infection, you want to nip it in the bud before it gets out of hand. No sense in waiting till your oosing something. Who did you surgery? I was told that the incisions would only be 1". Im shocked to see how large yours is.

I was banded on may 30....the largest incision that we have is for the port. Mine was red only around the incision, but nothing like that. You may have something as simple a reaction to a actual a infection.

Dont be afraid to call.......that is what they are there for....

Good luck on your journey...it will all be worth it

i agree and think you should see your doctor, is the redness hot.. maybe sign of infection on the skin and you may just need a few antibiotics. so nothing to worry about !

i am 6 weeks post op and healed well, the top scar was right in the place where my bra rubbed it and it took a bit longer to heal but is all good now.

and my skin felt numb for a while but that has all but gone now.. the big cut, the one you refer to felt sore up until now.. just rubbed on the band of my trousers .. but its all good now.

hope it heals soon.

I had surgery on Tuesday also. I think you should call. My incision is about the same size and bruised but definatley not red like that . I agree that you have paid enough money to these folks to be able to ask when you are concerned.:P

Thanks for the advice and encouragement to go ahead and call. I called this morning. They said to use a pin and draw a circle around it. If it gets larger, I should go to the ER. I certainly hope it's not an infection, but if it is, I want to take care of it ASAP.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
