At the beginning

Recommended Posts

Was banded in May of 2011, I lost a total of 10LBS yep that was it, never been happy with it. Visited my Doctor recently who suggested that I go for the Gastric Bypass and have the band removed. After speaking with him I decided to do some research and I found his site and I really like it, real people going through the same things as me. I really enjoy reading what everyone has to say and it has helped me make my decision to go for the Gastric Bypass. I'm at the beginning stages of approval, but thankfully my insurance doesn't really require much for me to have the revision. I'm glad that I found this site and I'm excited to follow everyone's success. I don't have a surgery date yet, but it shouldn't be to long.

I had my band put in Oct 2011 with a loss of 47 lbs and a gain back of 30 lbs and will be converting to bypass June 30th. I can't wait! I wish I would've done it to begin with.

I had mine in revised on 3/10/15 and have no regrets! I go today for my 3 month follow up....very interested to see how my blood work is. I feel great and have been averaging 10-12lbs loss each month. The only food I can't tolerate is oatmeal and cream of wheat ...both on the approved list but no luck. Good luck!

I had my revision on May 19 (after the band in 2009), so I'm not far out but I am happy I made the change. I had trouble and pain in eating ANYTHING HEALTHY with the band. I started back on solids last week and I haven't had any intolerances yet. Even better, I actually feel full, which I never once got with the band. I can eat more than I'd have thought/hoped, but I'm feeling good about it. I'm down 28 pounds, and I can't be upset about that. I have a group of five bandster girls that get together; one made it to goal (and beyond), two of us have failed, and two are kind of in between, still fighting it. I was sure the band was the cure for me because my issue is hunger and they promised satiety. That didn't happen. I'm still a newbie, but this was the right direction for me.

Veronda, I'm very happy that things are going well for you! I'm more confident now that having the revision is the right choice, my weight has always been an issue and continues to. I'm getting more excited about having the gastric bypass. I meet with my doctor again next week. My insurance only requires a few things to be approved. I hope you will keep me posted on your journey.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
