You get under a BMI of 40 during the pre-op diet?

I will ask my Dr next week but right now it's on my mind because I found out yesterday that even though I will be referred to my surgeon next month it'll still be 2 months before surgery. That means I have another 3 months to lose weight. If I keep going as I am I will fall under a BMI of 40. I am lucky to not have any co-morbities, but does that also mean I will no longer qualify?

I think it's insane that if I lose 12 more lbs I can be denied even though I will still be 80 to 100 lbs overweight...

Does anyone have experience with this? I don't want to stop trying to lose but I don't want to be disqualified either.

My BMI is under 40 and my doc said I was borderline. Now I have to go through all of these tests. I hope it all works though... And for you as well.

@HopeandAgony- I am in the exact same boat as you. I have always been told that the insurance company uses your weight at the time of your consultation to make their decision. My initial BMI was 36.5 but I have a comorbid condition of sleep apnea. I'm going through all of the required tests and things and am still skeptical that Aetna is going to approve me!

My insurance accepted my original weight and BMI at consultation.

I started my insurance bariatric program with a 45 BMI, no major comorbidities. I finished with a 39 BMI and was still approved.

Like @@Miss Mac I was a hair under a BMI of 40 at my first weigh-in.

And then (on my own) I lost 12 pounds and then the pre-op diet took another 8 pounds off me.

So I was 20 pounds down on the day of surgery.

Now here's a secret -- don't tell anyone! On all the intervening appointments between my first weigh-in and my pre-pre-op diet, I loaded up my bra, pockets, etc. with half-pound weights so I wouldn't weigh in "too light."

So sue me!

:lol::D

funny how "we" change at different time periods for various reasons

i used to do WW (a few times :( )

i would see silly people take off jewelry, this and that to weigh less

i have seen others here adding stuff to increase their weight

never heard about the stuffing bra :D

sounds very "full filling"

glad it helped/worked!!

look at you now B)

down 89 lbs - goal

you look terrific

keep up the good work my friend :)

kathy

@@HopeandAgony

didn't forget you ;)

no experience with your issue (lower BMI)

for good or bad, i didn't have that problem before surgery

i agree to talk to your doc

maybe" anonymously" call your insurance company explaining your BMI situation

it is ridiculous that if you loose to much weight- you might be disqualified

as @@Miss Mac said,,,,,,,

"My insurance accepted my original weight and BMI at consultation."

hopefully all will go well for you

just in case...........

you can always appeal what insurance says

don't just throw in the towel and say oh well

good luck :)

It's always eye opening, the different struggles people have. Usually my struggle is losing weight. Now that I am doing what I am doing I am losing fine. The thought of "maintaining" is terrifying. I have lost what I needed to to qualify, now to decide if I should continue to lose (ideal of course) or try to maintain where I am so I don't risk being disqualified. Next week can't come soon enough to talk to the Dr. I can so easily see myself going back to bad eating out of fear of losing too much. Sigh.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
