Can't get enough fluids

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved 5/29 and the first week I was getting my 45oz of Fluid but this week I can't get it all in and I think I'm supposed to be at 65oz. I know I'm borderline dehydrated because when I get up quickly I have to just stop because the room kinda blanks out then it comes back into focus. I am sipping as much as I can but I get full so quickly. How do you guys get it all in???

Have you tried experimenting with different temperatures for your Water or different flavoring? I can't tolerate room temperature water. I need it to be SUPER ice cold. I can handle hot beverages, like tea and coffee no problem. But I can't do anything in between. Some people find it easier to get fluids in by adding flavoring like MiO or crystal lite packets. When I'm really dehydrated, I drink G2. It does have some calories and I know I'm not supposed to drink my calories, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I find I can drink it very quickly and easily and it's very hydrating.

My doc told me g2 I have been sipping on it for 2 weeks now it helps but my problem is I get full so quickly I take 3/4 sips n I'm done I was excited I had frozen yogurt yesterday but 2/3 spoon fulls n I cudnt handle it so I gave it away. But I'm going to get some unflavored Protein so I can mix it with something so it won't be this bad

Sounds like you maybe still have some swelling that is making your restriction worse. Just do what you can and talk to your surgical team if the dehydration gets any worse.

I had severe swelling in the first couple of weeks post op that made it very hard for me to drink Water. I went through this whole thing where, no matter how tiny a sip I took, I would have this severe constriction of my esophagus, followed by gurgling coming all the way up into my throat, and then I would usually have to burp. Every single sip was that whole process over and over and over again. It SUCKED. But it got much better once my swelling went down.

I had same experience for first 3-4 weeks - I just didn't want to drink Water. It wasn't a restriction issue, just a problem with drinking Water all day. Not for me at that time.

Then, I started having Constipation issues and them got gout in my right toe/foot.

Knew I had to start pumping the fluids.

Ironically, during week 5 it changed. I was able to bring myself to drink water on a routine basis. Used my new Apple Watch with timer set to every 15 mins. So, I just always had water with me at work desk during day and on side table during TV watching time.

Timer goes off, drink, reset timer.

Btw, don't forget that if you do Protein drinks, you can count that as Fluid intake. Ditto for Soups. Ditto for skim or low fat milk products.
