Does anyone know how many calories you burn doing hot yoga?

Recommended Posts

Started doing hot yoga classes, mostly for the stretching and balance, but I suspect I am burning some serious calories. Anyone have any good numbers?

Hidden Dragon: http://www.hiddendragonyoga.com/

They have a mid-town and Edmond location. Mon and Wed at 6 they have a beginners level class, with core work. Great stuff. I am usually the only guy in the class sans the instructor so please introduce yourself Soonergal91.

Probably not as much as you think.. yoga, and hot yoga is awesome, but i mostly sweated during a 90 minute class.. I burned around 400 calories.. as opposed to about 800 if i was biking.. but it was a good stretch.

Try wearing a heart rate monitor.

  • Chrystee, great idea, will do that tomorrow night. I find that I double up workouts on Yoga days, I'll throw in a 3 mile run after 5 or 6 hours of re-hydration ;-)

I normally do yoga on my rest days.. Otherwise, I'd do the cardio prior to the class.. you want to relax.

Does this include calories burned during the post-exercise trip to the ER? :)

I commend you - hot yoga scares the crap out of me.

Surgery was Nov 7, could have been able to return to work on the 9th, but waited until 11th. Only vomiting was when I tried pizza two months later and didn't chew it enough ;-) I had the sleeve

Based on my heart rate monitor and some sites I found online which does the math, I burn 594 calories during an one hour session.

I love hot yoga. At first I was also scared of it but I did a lot of other yoga classes at first: foundations, then some flow or vinyasa classes and now I do hot yoga about 3x a week and vinyasa 2x. The vinyasa yoga poses are more challenging but the hot is absolutely cathartic and cleansing. I think or at least my apple watch tells me I'm burning approx 200 calories in a vinyasa and about 300in a hot yoga class.

That's fantastic.. I never burned that much, maybe 3-400.. even really large.. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
