Hi everyone. My surgery is scheduled for tomorrow, and I was wondering how well you're able to tolerate spicy food once you get back to solids? I love hot, spicy flavor profiles, and I was wondering if they would be out of consideration. Thanks!

I would not have had the surgery if I could no longer eat spicy food, I love it that much!! No problems with it at all!

I am probably an exception but I can no longer eat spicey foods. I can't even tolerate very much black pepper. I can take a couple of bites and it goes to burning my stomach and then my stomach starts all of it's foaming and everything comes up...TMI!! Then my stomach is irritated for several days and I cannot eat anything. I was always a big spicey eater before the surgery.....I cannot even tolerate barbeque sauce with the least amount of punch to it.

Sadly, I can't tolerate spicy foods (8 months out). They make me promptly throw up. The doctor says eventually that will go away. I'm waiting for that day, I absolutely love spicy food and miss it.

Since the soft food stage I was putting mild salsa on my scrambled eggs. When I was cleared for regular cooked foods, I promptly stopped at Wendy's on the way out the door (well next-door to the clinic) and got a chili. It took me four days to eat it because of the quantity, but the spices gave me no trouble. At that point, I could eat onions in a dish if they were cooked, and extra black pepper to compensate for less salt.

I haven't had any problems with spicy foods post-op. I was having strained enchilada Soup in my clear liquid phase just a couple of days post-op. I will say that not being able to eat and drink at the same time has limited the amount of spice I can handle, just because I can't drink anything when my mouth is on fire from something super spicy.

Ditto. Even on full liquids adding a dash of Sriracha to my veg broth was tolerable.

I have always loved spicey foods, and am very thrilled that I have NO problems at all being able to eat all the spicey foods as I did before. I am 6 weeks post op, and just had jalapenos last night with no issues. Crawfish I tolerated well too!

Good Luck in your journey! The first few days will be tough, but you will be so happy very soon!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
