I'm starting my pre-op diet in 5 days and my surgery date is 6/25. It seems every since I found out my surgery date I've been eating a lot more thinking I better eat what I can since I'm going to be missing out on all this junk food after the surgery. I know this is the wrong way of thinking especially since we're suppose eat to live not live to eat. I shouldn't be focused on the food I'm going to be missing out on... but focusing on the new life I'm going to gain by losing the weight and getting healthy.

Has anyone else experienced that "last" meal mentality prior to surgery and the pre-op diet?

Oh, yeah. Around here in these parts we call it a "food funeral". A lot of us had one, or two, or three. Bye bye Twinkies.

You are not alone.

Yup, very common. I had to rein myself in because I knew I was going to make it harder in the long run. What I did the last couple weeks before I started the pre-op diet (on day 7 now) was to start with subbing Protein Shakes for some meals and then have something I wanted to say goodbye to at one meal each day. Still not ideal, but it kept me from gaining more weight while getting some "closure."

So normal! I did the same. If I didn't have to lose 16 lbs by surgery date I would've seriously gained 30 lbs! A nurse I know told me to eat and enjoy it. You've come this far..trust me. EAT!

I've been doing the same thing since I got my insurance approval. I've gained back some of the 29lbs I lost so I've got to stop. I went shopping today to stock up on healthy foods again and I hope to make better choices until my pre-op diet and surgery in July.

I had way too many food funerals. Acted like I was never going to eat again. Is it the right mentality? Probably not, but it's normal.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
